There are two canals encircling Dublin City Centre, one from the north (Royal Canal) and one from the south (Grand Canal). I have read that they were commercially last used in 1960. There are a number of locks allowing the boats to pass under the usually low bridges. The areas along the canals are rarely visited by foreign tourists. They are not mentioned in any guidebook and are beyond tourist maps.
This is my 4th photo taken along the Grand Canal in Dublin. I have created a special theme grouping these photos. The photo presents a pub, The Barge. I have already showed this pub photographed from a similar POV at the blue hour (SEE HERE). In this view you can better see the lock on the canal. The building in the far right side is the Dublin Hilton Hotel.
The weather in Dublin is bad all year long. However Dublin has the best weather in Ireland. It rains here much less than in the west although it is much colder, temperatures rising above 18 grad Celsius just in few days per year. This year’s record high temperature was 23 degrees. Quite often though there are bright sunny mornings. The sun lasts for one-two hours and then disappears for the rest of the day. This photo was taken on one of such mornings. Half an hour after taking this photo the dark clouds arrived and stayed for few next days.

one should not believe about the weather conditions, when reading your note and looking at this bright and sunny location.. but if there is one thing constantly changing, then i will be the weather, for sure..
thanks for sharing, see you around, kindest regards Bernd

a striking shot and composition, such perfect clarity and detail. The light is so vibrant, and the shadows distinct so that they make the colours stand out beautifully. A stylish image and presentation. Love it!
Have a great day - regards Brian.

One of the old locks in Ireland, we can see these is very old, but always perfect working, this is important.
Perspective and depth are very well.
Also the facades in background care for an attractive picture.
Nice captured and good composed. TFS.

the reflections of this interesting architecture on the water of the canal are a nice aesthetic complement for your composition, and you have included them skillfully in the framing.
The image is very sharp and has a very well balanced exposure, which gives an excellent result in the light and in the quality of the colors of the picture.
A beautiful work.

nice the view of the Grand canal in Dublin, but the houses and the modern buildings on the right of the image, i think that makes the scene more effective and interesting as steal the show.I like the brilliant light of the scene as the details we can see in it.
Have a good afternoon,Danos

bardzo ladna i ciekawa nowoczesna architektura. Ladne kolory przyjemne dla oka. Pogoda dopisala, ladne niebieskie niebo.Super odbicie w kanale. Ladnie wykonane zdjecie.

well, after reading your note i certainly don't want to move to Dublin! wow, and i thought our weather in Van was bad!
i'm glad you got up early to shoot this morning light.
love the sharpness, the cobble stones, the water reflection, the strange unique colors and the overall exposure levels.
it really does look like its of high quality.
lets hope for more sun!
enjoy your day

Ciao dear Mariusz,
is a real pity that this place is not known by tourists, because it is very interesting and characteristic. Your photo is perfect as always, this time enriched by the small but important reflection of the canal. Today, after a fantastic and unusually hot weather in October, the autumn has arrived in northern Italy, tonight there are only 10 degrees, after a day of rain and wind :-(
Ciao, have a nice and sunny weekend!

Enjoyed this little trip around Dublin, this is a narrow canal passing through a quiet and relax town. A place to sit on a lock gate and contemplate the eternal questions. Or just sit and dangle your feet. You have given us a wonserful insight, how the calm and quaint can be in the heart of a City, a real taste of Dublin (apart from the Guiness). I am very pleased with the impressive composition and viewpoint. My eye is glued to the pastel colors and cotinueously following the bending road into the far end. Great contrast achieved to the blue sky. Thanks for this informative capture, Congrats

Good night Mariusz
Interesting note about the weather...which is not so bad for one or two hours, not so bad..it seems
The capture has a good POF and great reflections on the channel
I marvel at the very blue sky and like the typical Irish green color of the pub
Greetings and wish you a great plenty of sun weekend
Hope you solve your problem in a way NOT to have spare time for photos

interesujace miejsce, opis i te odnosniki do innych zrodel. Zdjecie tez bdb. Swietna jakosc mimo mocnego kontrastowego swiatla.

Wonderful composition, beautiful view to the canal with reflections on the water, interesting architecture, lovely light and vivid colors, excellent POV and contrast.
Have a nice weekend, Vasilis.

Hi dear Mariusz
You've described the weather perfectly, and the North and North West cop it even worse. But you were lucky here with all these beautiful crisp colours and reflections. The sky is so blue! The cobblestones are a lovely addition and I like the diagonal lines created by the canal. Great shot of a little known part of Dublin.
Have a beautiful weekend
siolaw (38292) 2011-10-08 4:45
You have wonderful and sweet colours here, and great clarity. Sharp and clean image. The weather was very favourable!

You have captured these reflections of these colorful building very cleverly. The light, colos and sharpness are great.
s_lush (16596) 2011-10-09 6:44
These comparatively new Dublin's buildings look not less impressive in your Irish gallery than old ones. The canal has given the interesting foreground and highly aesthetic optical reflection for the composition. The best thing is that you have managed finding such a nice sunny weather for getting vivid colors and perfect quality. Excellent job!
lgir (7363) 2011-10-09 8:19
I like the contrast rendition of the POV, well built between the different plans.
Good work where you find a color of Ireland, even if here is a brand of beer that appears.
adramad (47704) 2011-10-10 10:11
Fantastic perspective of the street with the channel, which provides a nice complement to their reflections, bright colors of the buildings also give great charm to the image sharpness that shows detail and texture of the floor tiling, a beautiful color to also helping the blue sky. Very good light and sharpness.
chawax (20758) 2011-10-10 10:50
I had no time to visit this part of Dublin, it looks more quiet than other places in the city ! You had a nice morning light. You used very well the perspective lines of the quays to add depth. Nice colours and good sharpness.
Have a nice day,
Angshu (56760) 2011-10-13 3:15
The canal seems to be extremely narrow at this point! What is interesting is the abundance of pink as a colour in the buildings...buildings of various designs but all painted in pink...not a very common colour. Any specific reason? Nice little reflection in the water as well!
jlbrthnn (76039) 2011-10-18 3:40
You skillfully composed the photo, with the dark channel, in diagonal, in front of the enlightened and colored facades. You placed skillfully the very clear reflection. Very good work, an interesting photo, very pleasant to look at. Bravo.
Have a nice day
andywo (4725) 2011-10-29 9:19
Podoba mi sie ten zakatek Dublina - czuc w nim specyficzny, irlandzki klimat.
ikeharel (74799) 2013-04-23 8:10
Good evening Mariusz,
Maybe you meant to show a nice reflection, but did good chosen to show the surrounding area with the barge-bar.
The night scene attached also most impressive.
The green tone mingle with pink is charming, and modern building down the canal-front complete a fine view over.
