[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
While on holiday in England/Europe in 1999 we arrived in Dublin and decided to go to the Guinness building. We had an interesting time there and when we left we saw this horse and cart. So I, naturally, wanted to take a photo of it. Stopping the car I jumped out to snap away, but this dear old man came out of a doorway and insisted I take a photo of him with the horse and cart. Now, I’m was only newly arrived in the northern hemisphere, more or less just got off the plane, and I knew nothing then about paying for photographs. But I soon found out. After one snap he held out his hand, and I, feeling quite scared, slipped my hand into my wallet and grabbed a handful of Irish coins and he took them all. I have no idea what I paid him as I didn’t know what coin was what, but I have a fair idea that it was quite an expensive photo.

But we loved our time in Ireland and took many photos after that. I won’t forget this occasion.

I have scanned the photo and sharpened and brightened it.

Hello Janice. It was expensive but it's a nice picture. The old man seems to be the one who conducts the cart. The guinness in background helps in understanding what the cart is designed for: transporting beer barrels, I guess. The image however suffers some lack of sharpness and a magenta excessive coloration. Both can be corrected with Photoshop. See workshop.

LOL....indeed expensive. Looking back at it, I think you have broken even with him because of this nice shot. It has an old-time feel. It has a good compo. He has a very commanding presence so I am not surprise he intimidated you with his mere presence.

This is a delightful capture Janice. It evokes an earlier time, motivating me to do a workshop that does the same with the image. Yours is a perfectly fine image, well composed and executed, so mine is simply a playful exercise in Photoshop. See what you think about the alternative.

no matter how much u paid him, it'll nvr equal the image you got here Janice. great shot! but i like the b/w composition more. is this a digital image or on film?

It looks like a very old picture. I think that converting it into monochrome and adding grain could make it look more effective. I like it a lot. Best wishes!

Regardless of the image quality - this is one of those pictures that just brings back memories. Regards Colin

I can't believe he charged you for it! I won't repeat here what my initial reaction was!! ;)

Nice 'old style image', I would imagine that given the hi-tech operation that is the St. James' Gate brewery that he's not employed by them...he just harasses jet-lagged vsitiors!

I like the colours & detail on the horse.

Hello Janice, I really found your note amusing (but I doubt if you thought so at that moment):)
I like Curtis Grindahl's Workshop as it makes the image look so authentic.
Excellent compo,
TFS!
Shelly.

Hi Janice.
This is a very good shot.
It represents very well Ireland; and It's a magic moment!
It looks like a very old picture.

Renzo

Hey Janice,

Check this out:

Payed a Euro (or two, don`t remember)

Which only shows that not much changes in Ireland in ten years or so. :D I think that even the poor horse is the same. Anyway, a nice photo - beautiful composed and colored. Some errors because of the scanning, but no matter. This man is a virtual legend. :>

Best regards.
