Muckross House Killarney Photo

Photographer’s Note

Muckross House (Irish: Theach Mhucrois) is located on the small Muckross Peninsula between Muckross Lake and Lough Leane, two of the lakes of Killarney, 6 kilometers (4 mi) from the town of Killarney in County Kerry, Ireland.

Muckross House is a mansion designed by the Scottish architect, William Burn, that was built in 1843 for Henry Arthur Herbert and his wife, the watercolourist Mary Balfour Herbert. With sixty-five rooms, it was built in the Tudor style. Extensive improvements were undertaken in the 1850s in preparation for the visit of Queen Victoria in 1861. It is said that these improvements for the Queen's visit were a contributory factor in the financial difficulties suffered by the Herbert family which consequenced in the sale of the estate.

Killarney National Park was formed principally from a donation of Muckross Estate, which was presented to the state in 1932 by Senator Arthur Rose Vincent and his parents-in-law Mr. and Mrs. William Bowers Bourn II, in memory of Senator Vincent's late wife, Maud. The park was substantially expanded by acquisition of land from the former Earl of Kenmare's estate.

The house, gardens and traditional farms are all open to the public with guided tours of the house's rooms.

The light is perfect to bring out the tones in the lovely Virginia creeper. I like also the well chosen point of view that allows us to see two sides of this rather interesting and imposing house. Excellent colours and clarity. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Albert, Brilliant and colorful building. The clouds accommodated this picture nicely. You have done a very nice job on this castle. The vines really enhance the structure too. I am sorry but I cannot find anything negative in this. Good job. Roger

Hi Hartmut, the grand old houses of Ireland are not seen enough on this site (have you sseen the one in Kong, County Mayo?) The colours of the vines on the wall are just wonderful and you have captured every god part of the light possible. The image is woderfully sharp and I like the positioning of the house to the far right of the frame. Great work, TFS, Lisa.

This is a well composed shot of this ivy covered building. The hedgerow creates a nice diagonal through the shot giving the photo a sense of direction. The angle of the shot works well creating depth. The lighting and colors are fine and the photo has nice sharpness and detail.

Hello,

I like the nice vivid colors shared by this photo (especially the red tones). The contrast as well is well tuned.
My only point could be the branches on the top. I would have prefered at least they are not touching the chimney. With 1 step forward it could have been achieved.

Hello Harmut,
I lov ethe color on this shot, the light are is really well saturated with vivid colors especially on the green of the tree the yello area is just a little bit strong but it give very nice contrast. the orange red of the ivy that climbed all over the building is very beautiful, in many cases, I like the tree branch at the top to frame the photo, but here you can go without it, it actually kind of a distraction here. regardless it is a very beautiful image.

Very nice edifice and excellent shot. The composition is very well balalnced with the house well located on the right nad a plesant prospect open on the left. Superb red color of the vegetation very well collected. Contrast, details, colors under a beautiful sky. very good photowork.

I like this place, visited it couple of times.
The house has a nice architecture and setting.
It is apparently a great place to show the autumn in Ireland.
Red leaves covering the house make a nice contrast with all other colors especially so rare in Ireland blue sky.
