Photographer’s Note

Another picture from my trip from Brest to Galway on La Recouvrance, in June 2002.

We are sailing here close to the Skellig Islands. These islands are in fact two great rocks : Skellig Michael, the biggest (here) and Little Skellig. On Skellig Michael, monks have lived, building small beehive huts, more than a thousand years ago. One wonder what strength, what faith, could have driven men to come, build houses and live on this deserted rock, faraway from the mainland, hard to access in rough sea, open to seastorms and wind, on which not much can grow...

On the foreground you can see the mainsheet (used to manoeuver the mainsail) and the brace used to move the topsails (the square sails at the top of the foremast) (sorry if these aren't the right words but I'm so bad with maritime English vocabulary...It's already a tricky vocabulary to master in my own language! :^).

Picture uploaded with a special thought for Danny O'Brien, you'll find other pictures and info on the Skellig Islands in his profile.
