[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hook Lighthouse is a unique example of an almost intact medieval lighthouse. It dates from the early 13th century and was a major feat at the time of its construction.

Purpose built as a lighthouse, it has served sailors and shipping for 800 years, apart from a short closure during the 17th century. It is thought to be one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world. When the Tower of Hook became fully automated in 1996 and no longer needed resident keepers, it was decided to celebrate its uniqueness by opening it to the public.

Hook Head wild and elemental, tranquil and serene, in its serenity hides the treachery which awaits unsuspecting mariners, little wonder that William Marshal earl of Pembrokeshire undertook the building of the lighthouse in the early 13th century as a navigational aid to guide his ships into Waterford Harbour. The tower has close affinities to Marshal castles at Ferns, at Kilkenny and at Pembroke in Wales. It appears to have been modelled on freestanding, cylindrical stone keeps known as "Juliets" which were popular in Wales and France during the early 13th century.

The tower was constructed of local limestone and the original building survives almost intact at just under 36.6m high. It consists of two tiers linked by a mural stairway of 115 steps. The first tier, 13m in diameter, has three vaulted ceilings each with an original fireplace. The upper tier, 6.3m in diameter, originally supported the coal beacon, which in modern times was replaced by a lantern.

It looks like the clouds coming or running from the light house to cover the vastness of the sky
Low POV is perfect
Hugs

Hi Derek,

Your lower POV and centered frame worked very well here. BW bands on light house very attractive with splendid colors of rock formations and cloudy sky. Nice effect of wide angle on rock textures too. Congratulations.

Best Regards,

Ertugrul

Hi Derek, very nice architecture photo and interesting lighthouse. Excellent colors and lights.
TFS and regards,

Philip

Hello Derek,
the low POV enhanced a lot the beautiful pattern of the rocks and adds a lot of depth leading the eye through the compo until we reach the beautiful lighthouse. The central compo works very well here with the amazing sky adding that bit of dramatic force whic is beautiful to look at. Great job!
Thanks for sharing it.
Regards,

Igor

Hello Derek,
Nice lighthouse and great sky. The colours are fine and this composition is good.
Well done!

Eino

This is one of those few occasions where the central composition of the main subject works well. I think it is because the lines of the rock on the left and the edge of the rock on the right all lead to the lighthouse. It gives it a kind of symmetrical feel and placed either left of right in the frame would have looked unbalanced. Funnily enough the clouds are doing the same thing above the lighthouse. I don't expect you can take credit for that but it all combines to make an excellent composition. Good work
Kath

Hi Derek,
a nice shot of this lighthouse. The composition is excellent and the clouds in this amazing sky really add a lot to the scene. Colors are also very nice, a very good one!

Take care
Mark

Hi Derek,
I love this image and all your gallery!

Vivi

The 2 elements rocks and sky compete each other. I like the lighthouse at the middle where the 2 elements intersects each other. well done.

Hello Derek
The rocks are a good starting point and lead nicely the viewer to the lighthouse (a bit too centered) under an impressive and cloudy sky with great luminosity.
Cheers
Marilyn

Derek, fine job capturing this light. With the lines in the rock and the lines of the clouds and the wide angle view there seems to be a great deal of motion. It is like the light is racing throuh the frame. Noce capture.

Greg

Bonjour,
superbe lumière et belle profondeur dans cette photo. J'aime beaucoup le ciel et ses nuages. Joli cadrage de l'ensemble;
Xavier

Derek,
that must be the oldest lighthouse in the world ... impressive - 800 years! I wonder how it functioned in the 13th century. What kind of light was there to warn the sailors? I'm sure that the building presented in your shot is a newer one. I like to see how the rocks and the clouds are providing leading lines to the striped building.

An accomplished photographer such as you would not miss such a sky and subject to make a good picture!!
Of course, in that kind of shot, the foreground is very important and here you have a good one. Even its colors mix well with the sky and lighthouse!! The central composition is interesting, it works really well.
See you!
Marc

Hi Derek, very nice capture of what must be the most impressive lighthouse in Ireland. Great sky as the perfect backdrop to the lighthouse. There is great mood to this capture. Well done.

you certainly have a very good eye for this type of photography, the composition, colours and light are just wonderful.

Hello Derek
I saw first this on your website, nicely laid out may I say, did you build your website or was that from someone else. I have been many times to Ireland as the parents are from there, never got to Wexford, we were always out West. Its a stunning lighthouse and well photographed on TE. The cloud hovering at the top are a great feature here. Excellent note as well.
Regards
Jim
