Photographer’s Note
A photo of the harbor at Dunmore East (An Dun mor Thoir), a popular tourist and fishing village on the westside of Waterford Harbour on Ireland's southeastern coast. The area has been long inhabited; Iron Age people established a fort overlooking the sea at Shannoon; even from this period, fishing was an important aspect of daily life. For hundreds of years, a fishing community has inhabited the coast. In 1640, Lord Power of Curraghmore, who owned a large amount of property in the area, built a castle on the cliff overlooking the strand, but only ruins remain now. The harbor, seen here, is one of the five designated National Fishery Harbors, and has the second highest figure for fish landings after Killybegs. It also boasts the world record for the largest rod-caught tuna! The village is home to the Waterford Harbour Sailing Club, and there are some wonderful seafood restaurants here as well. The most popular event is the annual bluegrass festival, which takes place at the end of August.
