Pictured here is Hore Abbey, a ruined Cistercian abbey that stands near to the Rock of Cashel in the town of Cashel, Co Tipperary.
This view is taken through one of the narrow slit windows in the surrounding defensive walls of the Rock itself, looking down across the landscape.
Originally constructed in 1266, this was at first a Benedictine site, but it was given to the Cistercians in 1272 by Archbishop David MacCearbhaill who later joined the abbey himself.
As he made himself at home here, he granted gifts to the abbey of many things which actually belonged to the local town including farm land, mills and buildings. In addition to his obvious dislike of the already established orders in the town, this construed to make him an unpopular man with the people of Cashel. Many people in the locality resented him and the order, and many considered he was far too in favor of the local Irish people than of the Anglo Irish settlers. This was evident in the murder of two monks who visited the town and the strenuous objection of 38 local breweries to the levies he had imposed.
This was the last Cistercian abbey founded in Ireland prior to the reformation, and despite the intentions of MacCearbhaill, it was never a prosperous place, eking out a living for the centuries it stood here.
Although most of the abbey was built in the 13th century, many changes were made to it over time, including the construction of the tower in the center of the transept in the 15th century. The design and finish of the church is very plain and simple and a very good example of how the Cistercians were very conservative.
Situated only 1km from the Rock of Cashel, this place is ruined and desolate and suitably gloomy. Positioned in a field, it is accessible to the public and there are beautiful views of it from the grounds of the Rock itself. Despite being in itself a formidable ruin, and a wonderful example of its type of religious structure, very few people visit it. Thousands see it from the grounds of the rock which is the view I show here, but not many take the short walk across the fields to view it up close.
Thanks for looking

Beautiful picture of the peaceful grasslands. Though the ancient abbey is ruined, it still adds immense beauty to the composition in the soft light. The treatment with the muted colours is beautiful too. your note is interesting and gives a glimpse into the social order of the period.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice weekend.

Jaysus now that's a humdinger of a name for an abbey. But then again, knowing what I do of the Borgias and other clerics, maybe more apt than I originally thought. This is a cracking photo. The abbey has been defined beautifully, as has the rest of the photo. The composition is excellent and those deep green tones are what Ireland is famous for. Excellent contribution and thanks once again for the impressive note.
Have a wheaty-juice day

bellissima panoramica, dove l'antica Abbazia domina le campagne circostanti.
Eccellente profondità e ottima qualità, è un peccato vedere certe antiche architetture
rovinate in questo modo.
ps non preoccuparti per gli errori, è poca cosa. Grazie

"It's a long way to Tipperary"
Your distant view of Hore Abbey ruins across the flowing green fields, is a stimulus to get up close and see the architecture from almost a millennium ago.
Thanks for sharing,

this point of view is really great and gives to the viewer the opportunity to enjoy the and study the ruined abbey within a wonderful context. I like very much the depth you created within the square frame and how the textured abbey stands out against the smooth, bright green land. The whole area is very attractive, I would surely enjoy very much a walk to the ruins and a closer inspection. The colours and the atmosphere are superb and I also like the effect of the subtle shadows. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

Ireland is small country, but watching your photos I'm sure it is one of the most beautiful countries on the earth. I was travelling around the world across many countries, but unfortunately I never made it to Ireland.
Beautiful view to nice stone abbey surrounded by green nature. Excellent photo taken from superb higher viewpoint.
Very well done my friend.

Wow! What a fantastic scene you have seen and photographed! This Abbey has for sure an interesting history but now surrounded by the beautiful green fields still looks charming and unique. Congrats! Excellent presentation.
Have a lovely day!

this place looks amazing! A superb view across the greens to get a perfect idea of the setting and crumbling beauty of this old abbey. This place is irresistible to me and strange how few visit it, mind you to be alone inside the walls is an experience in itself. Catching the sunset or sunrise through the ruins would be awesome.
Have a peaceful Sunday - B.

Ah, serene and beautiful Hore Abbey again. The abbey sits here beautifully in midst of the lush green landscape under a laden sky.
It looks so different in this weather condition than when we saw it on a freezingly cold and grey day.
have a great day

This old ruin of Hore Abbey stands out well in this landscape.
I read your Pov, was through a narrow slit window with interest, imagine instead of your camera having a weapon and defending this Abbey.
Great notes and facts about this Abbey and surrounding area.

The vast expanse of open landscape evokes that special atmosphere and tranquility but the abbey makes it even more special glueing the eyes in, and enriching the scene at the same time. It's superbly captured from a well considered viewpoint quietly contrasted by the appealing fresh green and grey sky with good detail throughout. This looks so very rest full place and calm seems to ooze out of this shot, skillfully captured documentary shot. Congrats, TFS
