Photographer’s Note

Within Oughaval Wood, Stradbally, Co. Laois, is what is known as the "Mass Rock". During the 17th and 18th centuries Roman Catholics were persecuted under the Penal Laws, and so this site was hidden deep in the wood to avoid detection.

The tree-covered area still attracts attention, as can be seen from the hand-made crosses scattered around the base of the rock.
