Photographer's Note

ventry harbour lies a few miles west of dingle in county kerry. ventry is a small village unusual in that it has two centres, both comprised of a pub and a shop. one has the catholic church, and the other has the primary school.

the whole ventry area is linked by the arc of ventry harbour, with one of the most attractive and safest beaches on the west coast of ireland. the rock layers are amazing and with the erosion from the sea has resulted in some wonderful structures.

this was the scene, according to folklore, where a great battle took place between fionn mac cumhaill and the king of the world. fionn had visited france, and abducted two french women, the daughter and wife of the king. the french king assembled a huge army, which included the king of the world, and headed for ireland to reclaim his women. the battle raged for a year and a day.
