Photographer’s Note
The statue of Charlie Chaplin at the beach in Waterville. Waterville is a popular seaside desination looking out over Ballinskelligs Bay, along the famous Ring of Kerry. The seafront is lined with pubs, restaurants and hotels. Behind lies the Lough Currane. This statue stands along the sea shore, and serves as a memorial to the beloved visitor. Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) was a notable English comedy actor and director in the early Hollywood era. He had a house nearby, and it was said that Waterville was one of his favorite places. Some odd trivia about him: a minor planet discovered by a Soviet Astronomer in 1981 was named after him; other statues include one in front of the alimentarium in Vevey, a replica of which stands in Leicester Square in London; he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a waxwork in Madame Tussauds.
