The picture does not give justice to the weirdness of this place. Starting from Portmagee, County Kerry, one of the most remote town in south west Ireland you can catch a boat to Skellig Michael. The island looks like a tip of a mountain immersed in the ocean. In the year 650 or so there were first settlements there, and some time later a monastery was build. Tough to conquer even for Vikings. No wonder. Nowadays it is tough to get there too. The place is one of the three places in Ireland which were recognized as world heritage sites by UNESCO and yet the access to the island is limited. Only few (about 10) boats have the license to land on the island, just once per day, with 12 tourists per boat.
Portmagee is about 2.5 hours driving distance from Cork City. Boat trip one way takes about 1 hour depending on the boat. Boats are small and are shaking pretty much over the whole time of the trip. Some people cannot stand it, we have witnessed various reactions there... Anyway when you land it is just a start of a really steep rocky mountain hike, which you would not expect from Ireland. Stunning views. Very interesting ruins of the monastery. Especially great when with good weather... Great adventure. On the way back you are taken around another sister Skellig island which is inhabited by a colony of 60 000 birds.

Certainly worth a trip. We heard however that some people tried couple of times without luck. Trips are often canceled due to bad weather conditions etc.
