Photographer’s Note
A stark reminder of a very bleak period in history, in a most beautiful place. During the Famine, people were often put to work on public works projects such as building walls and bridges; someone claimed that this was such a bridge. Even if it's not, I think it's an interesting contrast between the stunning scenery and color and the drab, rather stark railroad bridge that's no longer in use.
The Ring of Kerry is one of the most popular tourist routes in Ireland. Located in the lush and beautiful southwest, it passes through Kenmare, Sneem, Waterville, Cahersiveen and Killorglin. It's a popular day trip, but narrow roads sometimes make it difficult for motor coaches to pass each other; now all tour buses run in a counter-clockwise direction to avoid delays if two should happen to meet. Weather's also a factor: one of the bridges was out the day we took the drive, so we had to take a bit of a detour. I'm not sure where this was along the route, but it seemed to make a nice photograph.
