Bundled nets lie on the quay in the early morning at the attractive little fishing harbour of Portmagee. This shot was taken a few minutes later than this one and from a slightly different vantage point.
Portmagee known as An Caladh (wharf) in Irish is a village in the Skellig region of Kerry. The village is located on the west coast of the Iveragh peninsula south of Valentia Island. Locally the village is sometimes called “the ferry” referring to its location as a crossing point for boats to Valentia Island but nowadays a bridge links Portmagee and the island. The picturesque village is the fishing centre of South West Kerry with over 80% of the area’s fleet based in the harbour.

What a delightful image, blending still life with seascape. Beautifully framed and with superb control over depth of field. The light is quite sublime and such lovely reflections. Great photography. Thanks for sharing.

I'm loving these scenes from Ireland -- they call to the 1/32 of my heritage that is Irish (the Emerys from County Tyrone) -- and they illuminate the life of an island people for a boy who was raised in the American Midwest, so far from a seacoast that I was 15 years old before I saw a beach (and I was an adventurous teenager!).
The sky and the water here are fabulous. Can I say (with all respect!) that I go back an forth in my mind on the nets? They are a great colorful FG anchor, and I have trouble visualizing the shot without them, but they may have gotten just a little too much dodging? They have kind of an HDR glow that doesn't match the tones in the BG scene.
But I pick nits and I hope you know that I think this is a wonderful shot -- I offer this slight critique in the spirit of working together to think about images.

another stunning image from your Irish rovings, you must be pleased with the shots you managed to get whilst in the emerald isle as they have all been so beautiful. This is no exception and the blues in this one are just so vibrant. A superbly composed and executed shot that is both eye-catching and captivating.
Have a great weekend - Brian.

Hello Rosemary ,
The fishing nets provide excellent subjects . You've used these coloured ones very well in a beautiful composition , especially with this fine soft light .

This is a delightful shot with excellent depth afforded by the large bundled nets which make a fine foreground feature against the distant view.
The sky and its reflection on the smooth sea are divine as is the view of the bridge and distant hills. Lovely strong contrasts and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

Nice colors and beautiful light for this composition
I like the details and sharpness in the nets and ropes
A great image ;)

Ciao e buon fine settimana

I know the word "beautiful" is often misused and sounds cliché:),but this is the first word came to my mind after opening your image!
Your POV with the fishing nets in the FG as well as the warm and vivid colors make your composition really fabulous.
One thing more-the movement of the clouds.Looks superb and adds very nice dynamic feeling to the scene(I think the weather was quite windy?1/50sec.exposure time and the movement is so good visible)
Have a nice weekend

hi rosemary. do you hdr too? i like a lot the result, what those colorful ropes and nets add to the romantic landscape. i like the "i touched the silence" feeling.

The blue and green nets look like they were made of some kind of jewels. Their colours are so strangely intense. They provide a superb foreground for this fine view of a quiet sea with colours and light carryíng the freshness of early morning. By that time I might just have been getting out of bed, missing this lovely light :-).

I'm not used to seeing such colorful fishing nets, they look much more prosaic around here. I like the way the bright blue in them is echoed by that single boat in the distance. The sky emitting warm light is a beautiful backdrop, love the way it's feflected in the water. Must be a perfect day forfishing.
Thanks and best wishes!

Nice quiet mood and early morning light. Interesting place. Good that you opted for a depth of field that let both the close bundled nets and the landscape sharp. Pleasant saturated colours. The composition with the foreground giving depth is very ok but I can't resist adding that cutting a bit of the sky would have likely been ok too. That would place the bridge at around 2/3 and remove some of that big strangely blurred cloud which is not, in my opinion, one of the strong points of your nice photo! Just a very very humble suggestion, the sort of things people write less and less often.
Kind regards, Claude.

l'atmosfera rilassante del paesaggio è amplificata dai tenui colori del cielo che si rispecchia nell'acqua.
Una bella composizione, con le reti in primo piano a dare profondità.

Spectacular composition from the small port. I like the wonderful colors under the early sunlight. Wonderful!
Have a fine weekend.

excellent composition here. Love the vibrant colours present in this frame. Great foreground details. Superb depth. Another excellent catch from you. Tfs.

Hello dear Rosemary
You did really well with exposing these foreground nets, which no doubt would have been a lot darker prior to metering and post processing. The sky is wonderful, and everything is pinsharp in the BG. The reflections on the water are stunning and of course the fishnets provide a wonderful texture and character to the image.
Have a lovely Saturday

Lovely scene, well composed with good f/g interest and front-to-back sharpness. I think you've overcooked the colours, especially the blues however.
marabu61 (11331) 2013-11-09 6:42
This is indeed a superb morning over Portmagee in a gorgeous warm light and superb colors. Love the movement of the clouds visible trough the longer exposure and the small blue boat on the water is a real stunner. Well framed with the bundled nets in the foreground too.
have a great weekend

Light and color, your gifts in photography! This is again an incredible shot, though its a uniquely Irish shot, and a scene we could all see here, it doesn't look the way pretty much everybody would see it. Your timing to capture the clouds, the reflections, the light on the nets, and especially the blue boat on left is fantastic. Special note to the blue boat, I love that touch.
Royaldevon (43865) 2013-11-09 12:41
The colourful ropes and nets make a perfect focal image for this photograph, setting the scene.
I cannot believe the tranquillity of the water. The cloud reflections are hardly disturbed by the gentlest ripples.
The jetty helps to continue the scene into the distance where, surprisingly, the hills are capped by clouds, like large, coconut pyramids.
A very calm beginning to the day.
My warm regards,
abmdsudi (58218) 2013-11-10 7:49
A superbly composed harbour side image with plenty to take in, superbly composed and so very appealing on a crisp morning with nice light. A beautiful bit of the local scene that says so much about the area and the bigger picture: excellent detail, the colours says so much more and wins the day for me!! Love the subject matter very much - the bundled nets are wonderful as strong foreground subject with the harbor in the bg is a very effective way of telling a story-- superb image, sharp and clear! Very well done shot, Congrats

Nice warm cold colour contrasts between both the cyan and red and the yellow orange and blue. Sublime reflections on the glassy water surface with excellent sharpness and saturation. The fg fishing nets add depth to the composition. Have a nice week!

This picture has some glorious, vivid colours. I had not critiqued this one yet because I couldn't make my mind up about whether or not I like the PP work. I think that I do in the same way that I like Brian's highly saturated work. It doesn't look necessarily realistic but certainly makes an image with great visual impact. I particularly like the repetition of the blue in the small boat in the BG. There is also a lovely little cloud covering the top of the mountain. So very well done and thanks for sharing.
Kind Regards, Ann

Spectacular scene across the harbour of Portmagee with the colourful fishing nets in the foreground. Beautiful calm water with the reflections of the sky and the little blue boat in the distance adds nice touch. Superb, love it.
