Photographer's Note

There are two canals encircling Dublin City Centre, one from the north (Royal Canal) and one from the south (Grand Canal). I have read that they were commercially last used in 1960. There are a number of locks allowing the boats to pass under the usually low bridges. The areas along the canals are rarely visited by foreign tourists. They are not mentioned in any guidebook and are beyond tourist maps.

This is my 4th photo taken along the Grand Canal in Dublin. I have created a special theme grouping these photos. The photo presents a pub, The Barge. I have already showed this pub photographed from a similar POV at the blue hour (SEE HERE). In this view you can better see the lock on the canal. The building in the far right side is the Dublin Hilton Hotel.

The weather in Dublin is bad all year long. However Dublin has the best weather in Ireland. It rains here much less than in the west although it is much colder, temperatures rising above 18 grad Celsius just in few days per year. This year’s record high temperature was 23 degrees. Quite often though there are bright sunny mornings. The sun lasts for one-two hours and then disappears for the rest of the day. This photo was taken on one of such mornings. Half an hour after taking this photo the dark clouds arrived and stayed for few next days.
