You need time to discover less known neighbourhoods. It is so much easier while living in the place for a while. I am proud that my gallery of photos from Dublin next to typical touristy sights presents completely unknown views. I am sure even Dubliners would be surprised with several photos which I have uploaded from their city.
This photo presents Portobello College at the Grand Canal in Dublin.
It is the third photo along the Dublin’s Grand Canal which I present here, probably not the last.
ABOUT THE BUILDING
Portobello College can trace its roots back to 1805 when the Portobello building was constructed. The building was named Portobello House and it was actually a hotel. As the centuries have gone by, the erstwhile hotel has now become a center for higher education.
Today Portobello College is part of the Dublin Business School (DBS). It is the largest independent college in Ireland. With over 9,000 students, DBS provides a range of full-time and part-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with courses in subject areas such as business, law, event management, IT, the arts, media studies and psychology.
ABOUT THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
Portobello (meaning 'beautiful harbour') came into existence as a small suburb south of the city of Dublin in the 18th century, centred around Richmond St. During the following century it was completely developed, transforming an area of private estates and farmland into solid Victorian red-bricked living quarters for the middle classes and terraced housing bordering the canal for the working classes. As a fast-expanding suburb during the 19th century Portobello attracted many upwardly-mobile families whose members went on to play important roles in politics, the arts and the sciences. Towards the end of the century came an influx of Jews, which gave the name "Little Jerusalem" to the area.
Like the Portobello area of London, Dublin's Portobello was ultimately named for the capture by Admiral Vernon in 1739 of Portobelo, Colón on Panama's Caribbean Coast, during the conflict between the United Kingdom and Spain known as the War of Jenkins' Ear.

Coz za fantastyczna praca! Bardzo mi sie podoba kompozycja, symetria oraz kadrowanie. Budynek oraz jego odbicie w wodzie dominuja nad reszta w bardzo przemyslany sposob. Wyszlo super!

poor Dubliners if they don't know that spot, they really missed somehting.
You choose a good POV and captured the reflection nicely. There is a well symmetry between the line of the reflection and the building. Well done my friend, best regards, F.

What a quiet and lovely reflection, sense of tranquility in Portobello...the architecture is simple but nice and your note is very interesting. Thanks Mariusz!

Great composition and reflection of this fine looking building. I like the guy sitting on the seat with an otherwise peopless environment.

Super praca. Podoba mi sie.
Serdecznie pozdrawiam i zycze milej niedzieli,

very nice presentation of Portobello, that reminds me an Italian word than an Irish one.Excellent presentation of Portobello College with its reflection on the calmly waters to complete perfectly the beauty of the place.I like the creating perspective,as sometimes the natives don't know a lot about the buildings that exist in their city.

molto ben ripresa l'immagine del college con dei bei riflessi nella parte inferiore dell'immagine.
Mi piace l'inserimento dell'uomo seduto sulla panchina a dare un tocco in piů alla scena,

I wanted to visit Grand Canal when I was in Dublin but I had not enough time. Dublin looks quite a little city, but there are many things to see actually ! A very nice building and an excellent composition with both vertical and horizontal symetry. The light is very nice and sharpness is excellent. Great not typically irish weather ! Good idea to include the man on the seat in the composition, it adds a human presence to the picture.

I am hoping to follow your adventure in Egypt, i envy to see more from this land of pharoah!
Fully agree with your notes, less known places can provide us with lots of surprises and with immence opportunity for photography and much more relax away from swarms of tourist. We have all the time in the world to pick and choose our subjects in a casual manner and less pressure so to speak. Here i think your have ventured your new neighbourhood pretty well and shot at the right timing of the day, the light and colors quality are so evident as depicted vividly here. Wonderful pastel colors, enough interests to draw attention, good framing and the subtle water reflection in steely blue is truly wonderful. A really relax and quiet looking spot but the man makes so much difference to his picture. A much statisfying image and your excellent notes guides us through. TFS. Great capture. Congrats

The sitting man adds life to the view.

Good one Mariusz with the main building, although very centred, being effective due to the surrounds and the great reflection.

Ładna centralna kompozycja, bardzo wyraźna, klarowna, z łądnym odbiciem w wodzie.

Wonderful picture Mariusz,
and very interesting note too. At last I know the origin of this name (which doesn't need to be translated to my Italian ears... (:-) This building, so classic, so harmonious, is a great subject and your merit is to have captured it with a perfect and intense light which enhances the sharpness of the façade. But of course the real marvel which leave us with open jaws is this fantastic reflections. I like the presence of the gentleman on the bench too and the lovely intensity of the natural colours. A very good tribute to Dublin.
josepmarin (58357) 2011-09-27 1:02
the image of this beautiful building is very harmonic. You have corrected skillfully the distortion of vertical ones provoked by the wide lens, reaching a great result in the vision of this elegant architecture.
And I must say that the horizontal symmetry created by the reflections of this urban ensemble on the water gives a high aesthetic level to your composition.
Light and colors are perfect, it's a superb work.
jhm (151414) 2011-09-27 2:53
An classic in the middle placed with a wonderful reflection.
Happy a day without wind, this gives a very nice image of the building. Sharpness and clarity are simple fantastic.
Excellent captured nice composed.
Very well done, TFS.
sacimar (26205) 2011-09-27 4:12
this is a good image, I like the composition with the reflection building and the man on the bench, you are doing a good job showing us these not so typical views of Dublin, well done,
Urs (14082) 2011-09-28 3:20
Beautiful reflection of the building it the pool, it looks rather fresh, especially when I look at the man sitting on the bench. Vibrant colour hues with high sharpness. Nice POV and fine DOF. Well done
delpeoples (57278) 2011-09-28 3:53
Whilst not a Dubliner, I've been there enough times to know it reasonably well. But I don't remember seeing this building and certainly have not seen the canal looking so good. You're a one-man Dublin Tourist Board. It's absolutely beautiful. So luminous with amazing reflections and definition. Thanks for sharing these lesser known places with us, it's a real treasure.

cześć, Ja tez chciałam cos zmienić w moim profilu i stale sie ukazuje ten invalid e-mail.
sacavem (18620) 2011-09-28 11:25
Excelent details, very well perspective and fine reflections.
You have managed a great deal of depth and control.
Angshu (56750) 2011-09-29 8:43
The reflection of the College building is near mirror-like. Nice contrast between the colour of the building against the polarised sky. The elderly man sitting on the bench provides life here. Nice work & as always a highly informative note!
adramad (44804) 2011-10-04 8:18
Flawless composition with the elegant and classic lines of the building, perfect the beautiful effect of reflections, showing a double image, the lamp gives a nice touch of contrasting vertical with horizontal lines.
A razor sharp with good lighting, color complements the pretty picture perfect.

Pictures of Greece will take a little, because I have almost 3,000 in principle, we must now select and delete, then select a few to upload and prepare comments ......

Brilliant shot of this beautiful building! As you mentioned on my older shot of the Mansion House, I have sat in traffic on the canal a number of times, and considered parking up to take some shots here, but the area is always so busy, and I have never seen this so calm, and clear of traffic. The reflection is fantastic, and the old man on the bench adds a lot to the shot. Nicely done, and thanks for sharing!
