Photographer's Note

Another interior shot of the Palace Bar in Dublin. Here you can see the narrow main bar, the first room to greet you as you walk in off the street. The bar is long & narrow with a regal mahogany back bar showcasing fine whiskeys under the row of mirror backed arches, this tall elegant back bar stretches up towards the high wallpapered ceiling, affording this narrow space with a sense of space, light floods through the tall front arched window, screened at the base for privacy. One of the features that I saw in many Irish pubs were the mirrored screens that ran along the length of the bar, these afforded patrons a modicum of privacy as they sat enjoying their drink.

Built in 1823 the pub is one of the best preserved in Dublin and is regarded as ‘the holy grail’ of literary pubs Poets, painters, novelists and playwrights mixed with civil servants, lawyers and hangers-on in this European café litteraire.

I would like to share with you a poem by Flann O'Brien (Brian O'Nolan) the famed Irish novelist and satirist which extols the virtues of Guinness.

"The Workmans Friend"

When things go wrong and will not come right,
Though you do the best you can,
When life looks black as the hour of night -
A pint of plain is your only man.

When money's tight and hard to get
And your horse has also ran,
When all you have is a heap of debt -
A pint of plain is your only man.

When health is bad and your heart feels strange,
And your face is pale and wan,
When doctors say you need a change,
A pint of plain is your only man.

When food is scarce and your larder bare
And no rashers grease your pan,
When hunger grows as your meals are rare -
A pint of plain is your only man.

In time of trouble and lousey strife,
You have still got a darlint plan
You still can turn to a brighter life -
A pint of plain is your only man.

Here is a shot taken in the ‘snug’, a quiet room at the back of the front bar.
