I took this photograph on a recent visit to Howth in the north Dublin area.A beautiful little coastal town with a yaught club and a large fishing fleet. This monument has been erected and dedicated to all those lost at sea.
The monument was unvieled by the then president of Ireland Mary Robinson in March 1994.
An inscription on the back explains the design of the memorialand reads:
The cross represents the love of God,
The rope edge and shell motif, his nets.
The anchor reflects our dependence on him,
The rock....the safety of the land,
The swirlling stones...the dangers of the sea,
The twelve sides... the months of the year,
The hooped railing...the rise and fall of the waves.

I love the vibrancy of this shot, such at I feel I could just climb into the frame and go exploring. I've never seen this memorial before, so thanks for sharing something totally new in a town I thought I knew well. Your note is fascinating in showing how every element of the memorial has a reason, an that is really cool. Excellent viewpoint too, the town visible behind adds great life and context to the scene. Cheers for this!
All the bst

I like the depicted inspection you had included in the note, Arthur.
It doe's give an extra enlightment about the monument, which it is somehow self explaining.
Fine DOF with the view accross the by area and the anchored boats.

a wonderful composition with the monument shown in a superb perspective against the harbour and the sky. Depth and clarity are great and we can enjoy details throughout the view. I think that the symbolisms gathered on this monument are very imaginative but they must mean a lot to the local people. The strong colours and accentuated contrasts give a dramatic aspect to the lone monument and the tranquil place. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

I love little monuments like this one. To me, they're more precious than say, Lady Liberty or Arc de Triomphe. Which reminds me, we should have a theme of "Humble Monuments" or "Lesser Known Monuments". Thanks for seeing this, bringing it to our attention skillfully and writing about it sufficiently.
