This shot was taken during a drive from Baltimore to Mizen Head in County Cork. Taken from an elevation of about 140 meters and looking in a south-westerly direction, the small fishing village of Crookhaven is across the channel to the rear of my left shoulder. Cockle Beach and Brow Head are directly in front of me. An area steeped in history including evidence of Bronze Age habitation, this is a wild and beautiful part of Ireland.
The village of Crookhaven has a distinguished history as the last port of call for ships going to and from America. Over the centuries ships stocked up with provisions here before tackling the Atlantic Ocean. All the shipping lines had agents here to tell the ships in which port their cargo had been sold. At the beginning of the 20th century it was said that you could cross the harbour on the decks of boats. 700 people lived and worked in the village against the 29 permanent residents today. Marconi came here to try to get his first radio message across the Atlantic and he fitted the first telegraphic equipment to the Fastnet Rock Lighthouse to communicate with the passing ships.
Brow Head was a vibrant copper mining area in the nineteenth century; operations began at Brow Head mine in 1852 when Sir William Brougham and Samuel Hyde formed a partnership and set up a private company. The building you see perched on top of Brow head is a signal tower dating from around 1804. Major shipping lines, including Lloyds and Reuters, developed the site and used it to communicate with passing ships using semaphore.

A wonderful picture showing a nice variety of colours in the landscape.
The immensity of the landscape is reflected when looking at the road and the houses down there in the middle of the picture. There's even a beautiful sandy beach.
Best regards, Paul

Adorable landscape post here! Love the charming and perfectly executed composition with rocks in the foreground and beautiful green land in the background. The palette of intensive colors is stunning and made the view. Bravo!!!

A real beauty of a shot here, I can hardly believe it was taken in Ireland because of the colours in the sky and the amazingly calm sea. Lovely composition with the harsh rugged rock in the foreground and the lovey green peninsula dividing the sea in the background.
Have a nice weekend

a real lesson in landscape imagery this. All the elements are here, being perfectly placed and balanced. Love the fg textures and lines that just irresistibly drag your eyes to the beauty and wonder beyond. It is an uplifting seascape that you have captured so perfectly.
Enjoy your weekend - B.

A very attractive image with nice composition of fields, the lake, the sea and hills. I like the distribution and range of colours from gold to green to blue(s) to grey. A great depth of field from foreground to background. The larger image does more justice to the scene.
Thanks for recent comments.

A fascinating bit of social history to accompaniy this delightful composition. I like very much the framing offered by the rocky foreground, which nicely offsets the greens and blues in the background. The image benefits from a very pleasant ambient light and has excellent colours and clarity. I wish you a pleasant weekend.

J'imagine arriver devant un aussi beau spectacle offert par une nature généreuse mais aussi dure. La couleur de l'eau du lac est surprenante sous cette latitude. Le ciel est de toute beauté et les couleurs sont joliment saturées.

I have been enjoying your Irish series a lot and this photo is not an exception. Great POV and fantastic composition with very strong foreground and oddly shapes peninsula on the horizon. Amazing colors, especially the greens contrasting with brown bits caught my eye.
Thanks for sharing

An excellent shot with great colors and an excellent white balance.
Both the FG and BG are sharp so it's perfect ;)
Very well done
annjackman (16843) 2013-11-02 7:50
Another beautiful shot from Ireland. I like the vibrant greens in the BG and the orange/browns of the closer hills. I do like the strong FG of rock although my first impression was that it needed a small crop off the bottom to balance the picture. However, that would put that lovely clump of brown grass in the wrong position, so I think that you have this right. Gorgeous quality.
Kind Regards, Ann

a marvellous panorama with amazing depth and very strong foreground. The large version is breathtaking! I love the details in the foreground that establish a strong connection between the viewer and the landscape, they're so sharp it seems we can feel the textures. The flat rock also adds great perspective leading us pleasantly to the "wild and beautiful" area that lies ahead. I like the ambiguous intensity of the light as well as the way you managed these moody and brilliant colours. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,

Ciao e buon fine settimana

it´s so beautiful, that I´ve started thinking if it´s real. The vivid colors and strong graphics they create make your shot truly spectacular and for a while let us feel like we moved to some kind of tale.
Fabulous composition and superb PP work(colors and textures on the FG rock are superb!)
Have a nice weekend
holmertz (34647) 2013-11-02 9:41
Here the "emerald island" really deserves its name. The green tones are spectacular, and as far as I can judge they are not produced by Photoshop. It looks like there could be a very nice beach at the far end of the bay, although I can not quite make out the details. Probably the water is a bit cooler than in the Mediterranean. I appreciate that you included so much of the rock in the foreground. I love the pattern and texture of the cracks through the stone, as well as the brown tufts.
Noel_Byrne (17203) 2013-11-02 9:51
Wow and wow again. This is stunning, the colors you have captured here are really amazing, especially the greens and blues. I often feel like Ireland never gets blue water, but you prove me wrong with this, its like a tropical lagoon! In fact, the whole vibe of this shot is like of a scene from paradise. Incredible shot, thank you again. And wonderful note, you are giving me some great lessons and suggestions on places I must see soon. If I can achieve a shot half as good as this, I will smile broadly.
Thanks as always

Hi dear Rosemary
This place looks so wild and unspoilt. I love the rich colours, especially the golden/brown of the lichen in the rockface. And of course the texture of the rocks which again lead the eye towards the horizon. The colours are lovely and strong, and that blue sky and sea look almost like something we'd see on a Pacific or Greek Island. Lovely shot, thanks for sharing.
Have a beautiful weekend

I love it. The landscape is breath taking, the colors so pleasantly saturated. Composition very well thought through with this rough rock in the foreground and the peninsula appearing just behind. This is one of the secrets of Ireland. Beautiful place, a real master work and you were also blessed very much with the weather.

Nicely composed making good use of the rock in the FG as both a light area as well as FG interest. Lovely panoramic view with interest in the sky too. Vibrant colours.

Il y a une force sauvage dans ce paysage qui fait rêver, merveilleux contraste des couleurs et excellente profondeur, j'aime beaucoup
ktanska (23442) 2013-11-04 12:18
Very impressive landscape with lots of details on different colours. Stripy appearance of foreground rock looks good too.
Resized version on main site seems to have lost quite a bit of sharpness compared to large one on beta. I think I found at least partial remedy for that. I make large version exactly 1185 pixels wide. TE site resizes it to 790 pixels, which is exactly 1.5 times smaller. This resize factor is easier for resizing algorithm (sampling three pixels to two) giving sharper end result.
HimalAnda (7890) 2013-11-05 12:05
Congratulations for this beautiful picture with gorgeous colors and a very strong composition.

A very well composed image following the rule of thgirds to a t, with good breathing space around almost every element and superb sharpness. Wonderful textural details in the fg rock. Looks quite high. Splendid warm cold color contrasts too between yellow red and blue. Tfs!

je trouve la composition tres belle. Les details dans la roche sont vraiment top.

The green fields in background remind me a little of the Azores Islands, here in Portugal! This is a really fantastic view. I like the composition and the way you placed this rock in foreground, leading our eyes to the so different background. Colours are excellent!
Kielia (22293) 2013-11-17 9:11
you are presenting a very nicely composed impression of this wonderful landscape in a very nice light. The colors are fascinating. My compliments also for the interesting note!
