A trip to Mizen Head, Ireland’s most south-westerly point is both interesting and beautiful. A major transatlantic shipping route passes just south of the Mizen Head Signal Station, making it the last sight of Europe for many seafaring voyagers. During Ireland’s Great Famine (1845-1852), many of the famine ships sailed past this point, offering its passengers their last view of Ireland. Construction on the signal station was finished in 1910 and it remained in operation until 1994. Not only did this station play a vital role in preventing shipwrecks, but also it played an extremely important part in early transatlantic communication (particularly in the pioneering work of Guglielmo Marconi).
The geology of Mizen Head is complex and as recently as a few hundred thousand years ago, the area resembled the modern-day Alps. The folding and bending of the rock layers is well defined and give one a sense of the sheer power of geologic forces.
The footbridge seen in this shot opened on St Patrick’s Day in 2011. The reinforced concrete through-arch structure spans 50m across a sea gorge to connect the island of Cloghán, at the tip of Mizen Head, with the mainland in South-west Cork.
In the WS uploads you can see a couple of other views of the location. Unfortunately the view looking across the bridge to the signal station was compromised by the angle and position of the sun but it gives some idea of the dramatic location.

Excellent shot from this spectacular place taken from an impressive viewpoint. I like how the eyes are nicely taken from the foreground bridge to the road winding up to the headland. The light illuminating the rocks shows off the textures very well and the blue sky superbly complements the colours of the headland. I also like your differing angles of the bridge in the WS. An excellent capture of the mood of the landscape, and an excellent informative note, too.

The convergence of the bridge with its shadow below works perfectly to draw the eye to the winding road. You have chosen a wonderful vantage point , from below, to showcase the dramatic scenery. The picture perfect blue sky is the icing on the cake. beautiful shot

you were so lucking with the weather on your trip to the Emerald Isle. This is a dramatic composition which gives a real sense of scale to this obviously beautiful place. Glorious clarity and fascinating textures. Look amazing!

It sounds as if this signal station might have had a role in the capture and arrest of Doctor Crippen and his companion. I like the point of view, which gives due emphasis to the height of the impressive cliffs. The bridge sweeping in from the left adds an interesting graphical element to the scene and makes a good pointer toward the signal station. The splendid sky makes a great backdrop. First class technical presentation.

Hello Rosemary ,
At first glance , i could think : this modern bridge is a little incongruous in such a beautiful wild landscape .
On the other side , this is a fine piece of art , and a good way to cross the superb ravine . But was it indispensable ?
The picture is excellent , as the two WS showing us different perspectives .

Un point de vue parfait pour nous montrer ce joli pont qui passe au dessus de la crevasse.La lumière est superbe et fait bien ressortir les détails dans le mur de roches de la falaise.

Wow what a place. Even on foot I will be very jittery to cross this bridge. Good choice of POV to give us an idea about the height of the bridge. Amazing colours and detailing on the textures of those rocky cliffs. fantastic contrast between the cliffs and the clear blue sky. Out of the 3 images I like the 2nd WS photo the most because of the amazing backdrop for the bridge. Excellent capture, thanks for sharing.

All three photos are highly interesting, and together they give us a very good idea of this spectacular place. You could have used any of them as the regular upload, but probably this is still the best, because it shows the bridge from its most elegant angle. The very good light and sharpness make me feel the texture of the huge rock and the moss and grass covering it.

Impressive footbridge and impressive height, I think the bridge harmonize with surrounding rocks, perfect photo with great clarity

I am attracted to the unique bridge design with the single arch starting below and rising above the span, and the craggy cliffs it crosses. Looks like a good place to perch on top of and enjoy the scenery.
Thanks for sharing,

I remember the news article on this bridge when it opened, how proud everybody was of the neww structure, and it is so cool to see it now here on TE, and in your gallery! Its a dizzying shot, and gives a wonderful sense of height to the place, which is really cool. The texture of the rocks speaks loudly of those geological forces you mention too, they seem very raw, as if they have just been spit from the centre of the earth.
Beautiful scene, and what a glorious day you got too. Love your note, so many interesting facts in there that I never knew.
Thanks as always

A good POV that makes good use of the bridge as a line into the shot. An interesting and informative note too. I like the way the bridge's architecture is totally at odds with the landscape of which it is a part.

great POV, beautiful colors, useful note (as usual)!

Why Noel does not show us so interesting landscapes if Ireland??? Very attractive composition, excellent combination of the nature and a human activity.
The colours are just superb!

I remember there was fog when I've been there a few years ago, so I could not enjoy the view and the colours of the place as you did ! Very good POV, excellent colours.
Have a nice day,
