Close to Mizen Head and the fishing village of Crookhaven, Barleycove Beach is a quiet sandy beach with a wonderful stretch of golden sand. The beach itself has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation by the European Union, due to the variety of wildlife and interesting habitats present in the sand dunes. This shot shows the pontoon one has to cross to reach the beach which lies beyond the low dunes. I hope you like the B&W conversion, to my mind it is far more attractive than the colour version.

superbly chosen POV for this picture. It makes the path look even longer. Great depth and beautiful simple composition.
The sky with all its drama adds very much charm to the scene.
Well given sharpness and contrast.
Well done! TFS!

Good Morning Rosemary,
We are neighbours today.
I was immediately drawn to your shot, almost as if I was captured in the netting of the bridge. It creates great impact and offers a route that is impossible to refuse, across the water to the sand , and beyond.
Sometimes I perceive the sky as travelling with me to the distant hills; sometimes I perceive it flying towards me.
I like your shot very much. No colours to distract from the journey and the fine textures.
Have a great w/e,

love this! A superb B&W image, with a moody atmospheric, yet unbelievably enticing appeal about. Love the tones and shades here they add to the irresistibility superbly. A classy monochrome shot that is both effective and hauntingly beautiful.
Have a good weekend - B.

a splendid photo of this famous place, the composition is spectacular, great lights,
tyro (16792) 2014-02-21 2:45
Yes, although we don't have the opportunity to see a colour version, I can vouch that this picture most definitely "works" in black and white. And exceedingly well too.
The strong tones and contrasts really "lift" the image wonderfully well and the bright lines of the handrails or ropes either side of this pontoon lead the eye so strongly into the distance to the horizon and the glorious and characterful sky above it.
Your composition is both very strong and very pleasing, the tones and contrasts are delightful and the details and sharpness, as always, are exquiiste.
snunney (75164) 2014-02-21 3:52
I very much like the mood of peace and tranquillity, which is perfectly evoked in the black and white version. Also; the point of view and the long deep perspective. That sky is rather wonderful.
sevy (14917) 2014-02-21 3:52
Very nice conversion in B&W with large variety of grey tones and still a good contrast level.
The composition is leading the look of the reader in the depth of the shot.
Sergiom (49094) 2014-02-21 4:40
adidas5nb (3961) 2014-02-21 4:58
stunning frame and photography.very artistic.i really like the mood in here and the choice for b n w.
ACL1978 (6871) 2014-02-21 6:25
What a dramatic shot, Rosemary - the deep contrast of the B&W along with the vignetting really draws the eye down the walkway and into the wild unknown here. I can imagine that the color version would have a very different feeling to it than what you've given us here. Thanks!
holmertz (33585) 2014-02-21 6:40
Since you don't show us the colour version I can't make any comparison, but this version is no doubt very attractive. You seem to have used every tone of the greyscale to make the view very intense and dynamic, even though the scenery as such is very quiet and peaceful. The pontoon creates a superb depth through the flat landscape.
jemaflor (76682) 2014-02-21 6:46
Great result, well managed, impressive contrast in b&w and great depth effect with the perspective, well made, tfs.

Ciao e buon fine settimana

I'm sure Lisa will love it too.

krzychu30 (14442) 2014-02-21 10:46
I have only one word-Masterpiece!
It´s truly amazing composition, where you used the available light and B&W medium in a masterfully way to create so unique mood of the scene and to build its "dramaturgy".
Have a nice weekend

williewhistler (10927) 2014-02-21 12:09
such a lovely composition with perfect use being made of the vertical corners to lead the pontoon through the frame to the most interesting sky.
The range of tones and contrast works very well for me,it`s a good subject for mono treatment and you have handled it very well.
Kind regards Les.
carlo62 (22429) 2014-02-21 13:26
chrislo (3351) 2014-02-21 13:31
Great perspective effect looking along this pontoon. Your low POV emphasizes the perspective, giving the viewer a strong lead-in whilst the length of the pontoon gives the photo really nice depth. The picture has a great sense of peace about it, despite the gathering dark clouds. It's really atmospheric and I like the dramatic light in your picture. It looks like a really desolate place you've found. Your black and white treatment is absolutely perfect for this scene and it enhances the strength of the composition. A wonderful and strong image.
dekanski (1557) 2014-02-21 14:35
Is there an end?
Great, but I'd like to see a color version, too!
Noel_Byrne (16307) 2014-02-21 15:43
As I saw the thumb of this in the gallery, I wondered where it could be, how amazing that it's ireland. Another amazing place, and I think your choice of black and white is incredible here as this scene has such great tones Nd the sky I'd do full of drama. The depth is particularly superb.
jcpix (8402) 2014-02-21 20:19
I was pulled into this image the moment I saw it in your gallery! I don't think it's any one thing in particular, but the sum of all aspects has rendered one superb atmospheric shot! Without even knowing a color version, I would say this was the best way to go, there's a special light and subtle nuance to the deep perspective that I wish I could express in words...but this sparks more of an emotional reaction than what I can describe. That probably sounds over dramatic, so I'll simply say "terrific!' :) Enjoy the weekend. Take good care.
jjcordier (69655) 2014-02-21 22:36
HimalAnda (7744) 2014-02-22 1:26
Your composition is very good. This pontoon drives the eye toward the beach.
And the B&W is very nice, elegant, giving a real atmosphere to the picture.
RhodieIke (10415) 2014-02-22 1:42
This is fantastic, the B@W adds so much to the mystery and mood of this place.
Splendid Pov, making us to want to walk down this super pontoon and visit and explore this place.
Love the sky.
Top marks, Wonderful.
BennyV (13358) 2014-02-22 2:41
Terrific sharpness & a great sense of location. I like the darkness in this nature scene, a bit ominous perhaps.
annjackman (16513) 2014-02-22 2:48
I love the B/W conversion. Simple lines and a glorious, dramatic landscape. Super work.
Kind Regards, Ann
Cricri (95509) 2014-02-22 4:27
siudzi (29063) 2014-02-22 10:18
Wow! What a stunning shot this! Love the symmetrical composition taken with a great sense of depth. The fantastic light management and b&w presentation created a simply wonderful scene. Like it!
PaulVDV (18782) 2014-02-22 15:40
The pontoon leads to a very desolate landscape and the choice for black & white adds a highly dramatic feel.
Excellent perspective and composition.
Best regards, Paul
brianmcc (5965) 2014-02-23 2:38
this is a very eye-catching image. it's darkness and brooding mood draws the viewer in. and once there, you have composed the shot so that the bridge guides you further into the image. i love the black and white format. the areas of light, such as on the ropes of the bridge railings are stunning. a fantastic picture.
eldancer1 (22485) 2014-02-25 7:30
Trying to imagine this in colors...I like the B&W better especially the strong contrast. Great composition and easy for the eyes to follow the lines. Well done, tfs.
COSTANTINO (46560) 2014-02-25 7:56
Hello dear friend

an original and amazing environment
your composition is both very
strong and dynamic

a splendid photo of this famous
have a nice evening
corjan3 (1993) 2014-02-25 8:47
This is a marvelous image and B&W definitely the right choice. The composition is outstanding. You very successfully managed to break a "rule" of photography with the vanishing point in the centre albeit towards the upper third division and that, imo, is testimony to a very good image. The lines leading up to the vanishing point draw they eye in and the clouds keep it there. One could say a LOT more about the various elements but I would rather now sit back and enjoy. Very beautiful indeed. Best wishes.
CLODO (27510) 2014-02-26 7:55
great effect of the perspective enhanced by this cloudy sky, a good idea to show it in B&W;
delpeoples (50323) 2014-02-28 20:33
A fantastic shot in every sense of the word. I love B&W and whilst I know they don't do aswell points-wise here on TE, I find the great ones (like this) to be so much more compelling and artistic than even the best colour ones. Fantastic perspective and graphism. The light and shade is subtle and flawlessly regulated. The clouds have been worked beautifully, making the shot unique and otherworldly. This is like a bridge over the river Styx. Congratulations.
photoray (7988) 2014-03-01 7:40
Like everyone else an attractive monochromatic scene in high contrast of Barleycove Beach; the pontoon walkway leading the eye across the water and beach towards the hills and the dramatic clouds.
The monochrome approach avoids the easier bang of colors and requires attention to details and textures.
Nicely composed and created,
GyurMaster (296) 2014-03-01 12:03
Your photo has an excellent composition, which leads the eye, and your post-process is very impressive as well!
