Photographer’s Note
Kilcrea Abbey was founded by Cormac Láidir Mac Cárthaigh in 1465. During that time West Cork, Blarney and Macroom was called Muskerry. It was built for monks of the Franciscan order. Cormac seemed to love the Abbey very much. Cormac dedicated the Abbey to Saint Brigid. The monks spent most of their time praying and copying the Gospel. Like so many other monasteries and religious buildings, it was destroyed by the Cromwellian army.
It can be found just off the Cork Macroom road about 15 kms out of Cork.
