This is a shot of Baltray Beach, a fairly lonely beach at the townland of Baltray in County Louth.
Baltray itself comes from the Irish Baile Trá, meaning beach settlement, or beach town.
Although there is no real town to speak of here, just a collection of houses near the sea and a golf course along with one pub and one shop, it is only 8km away from the major town of Drogheda and like Drogheda, it sits on the estuary of the River Boyne.
In the scene here can be seen the shipwreck of the ship that was known as the MV Irish Trader. She was a 344 ton cargo ship that was registered in Hartlepool. On her last voyage in 1974, she was carrying 440 tons of fertilizer into Drogheda when she ran aground here at Baltray.
The wreck was never removed, and 40 years of coastal erosion have not been kind to it, leaving little remaining.
The wreck of MV Irish Trader makes this beach extremely popular with photographers, as low tide makes the wreck accessible. You can see how many pictures there are of this wreck on google image search.
Its a place I myself have wanted to visit for a long time, so decided to go there today, but it became one of the longest waits I have done for a particular photo. I got there just as the tide began to recede, but it took almost three hours for the tide to go out far enough for me to get the pictures I wanted. It was a benefit that while I was waiting, these girls on horseback went by on the beach!
Although this is not the shot I went to Baltray to get, it was one I was happy with nonetheless!
Thanks for looking.

una foto appena scattata dalla composizione impeccabile e con colori e nitidezza superlativi.
Straordinario anche il soggetto che contrappone al rottame della nave i due escursionisti a cavallo.
Una eccellente cattura.
Ciao e buona serata

I think it was worth it to come to this place and wait patiently. Finally, it paid off with long awaited photo of the rusty reddish wreck. Plus, you were awarded with beautiful sight of these two girls on their black and white horses stepping through the shallow water. Amazing surreal view. Photo is accomplished in very fine light supported by the peacefulness of blue water and the sky.

oh my, now i'm excited!!!
so excited that it is the first time i will read one of your notes only after writing a critique. the subject, that red rotten ship, is already a bombshell on its own, and you have two more riders! fantastic colors and light plus. this is no less than a planned scene from a movie. it is indeed good for you (and us) that you step outside abbeys and graveyards sometimes. kudos, open, fresh air......

Great light on your shot, lovely brightness and colors, original composition, well presented.
Happy New Year !

your determined efforts have paid a huge dividend, with the benefit of a lovely light you have captured a lovely photograph.
The two young riders one on a black the other a grey are well placed before the old hulk in a well considered composition.
I might have cropped just a little off of the bottom to move the horizon down a touch, but that`s just nit picking. It`s a cracking shot.
My best regards Les.

your long wait on Baltray Beach paid off so handsomely and the photo you are presenting today must be unique. It's so lovely that you got the two horses and their riders in this arrangement and at this position in the frame. I particularly like how the warm light sets off them and the shipwreck as well as how it seems to be absorbed by the magnificent blue of sky and sea. Depth and sharpness are exquisite too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

Your patience was well worth it! Superb composition with bright vivid colours, excellent clarity and sharpness. The pattern of water and sand in the foreground is very beautiful as well.

Very beautiful and pleasant-looking picture!
Sharpness, exposure, colors, chosen pov and, above all, composition are all excellent photo qualities that I really enjoyed!
TFS - congrats,

Gorgeous shot! It looks like the weather is still nice enough for a ride on the beach there in Ireland. I like the combination of the riders and the shipwreck. The horizontal lines of the waves and the ripples of sand on the shore are lovely. I looked at Deniz's WS, and his framing works very well with all of the lines in this beautiful photo. Happy new year! :-)

Tu as attendu le bon moment pour réussir cette très belle composition. La lumière et les couleurs sont les atouts supplémentaires de l'image.

This old wreck, almost totally eaten by rust, would be delight for Craig. and how lucky you were to see the riders near it. Fantastic composition and what colours! I like these horses, white and dark. Superb shot. And what the weather you had yesterday :)
Warm regrads Malgo

A scene almost like a movie stage ! Great luck and good photographers eye to have all those perfect photographic elements on the same time at the same place.

just magnificent my friend!
The way you composed and framed the scene is really great and the wreck makes superb focal point in the BG.What I love more about your image is its color scheme with dominating blue shades and so lovely contrasting wreck.
Beautiful photo with its own, unique charm!
Happy New Year!
Subhogen (3138) 2014-01-03 1:37
Fantastic shot from the beach. The horse riders against the backdrop of the blue sea would have made this a great shot, but the remains of the ship adds another dimension to this photo which makes it excellent! The power of forces of nature are so great that they have reduced such a huge ship to just this. Thanks for sharing, enjoyed this photo a lot.
snunney (75062) 2014-01-03 4:23
It was certainly worth waiting for to capture this beautiful serene light and the rich red tones of the rusted hulk. The two girls are perfectly placed in relation to the wreck and bring the scene to life. Superb saturated colours and excellent clarity. Fine photography indeed.
Miguel82 (16568) 2014-01-03 6:05
This is a fantastic shot Noel, a rusty old ship on the sea shore and people doing ecotourism activities, the horses are so beautiful, excellent colors and sharpness, thanks, warm regards
photoray (7896) 2014-01-03 6:49
Appealing beach scene with the rust colored hull remnant of the MV Irish Trader, two female riders on horses, and the calm waters flowing.
Not a bad place to wait for photography lighting, or anything.
SnapRJW (26034) 2014-01-03 8:26
Hi Noel - Perfect weather at the start of the new year; blue skies, blue sea..... was this really in Ireland? What a lovely shot, so different from your architecture but very charming and with a positive feel. I like that, there seems to be so much doom and gloom on the news that this is perfect showing the quite and simple pleasures that can be enjoyed in a world filled with turmoil. Beautiful light and nice saturated colours, a great start to 2014. Warm regards Rosemary
jhm (130608) 2014-01-03 8:41
This is real spectacular this wreck, almost totally broken through the salt sea water.
Your subject is wonderful as usual.
Sharpness and clarity are perfect, also the two horses are splendid.
Also a lovely panoramic view about these area.
A nice presentation, pleasant to look at.
Very well done, TFS.
Kamilutka (5653) 2014-01-03 9:29
what a splendid shot! The colors are magnificent, especially this amazing shade of blue. I really enjoy the clarity, sharpness and beautiful light.
The riders have been captured with interesting background and the whole compositions works very well for me.
aleXundar (1256) 2014-01-03 11:11
Your long wait has really paid off well. You have shown the Nature's contrast in your unmatched style. The two horses against the exquisite blues in superb lights, is life... the present. And the remains of the ship is past.
Great composition as usual.
An outstanding shot!
tyro (16744) 2014-01-03 11:42
A Happy New Year to you, Noel!
You have every right to be very happy with this photograph - it is delightful, it is well composed and the inclusion of the two girls on horseback riding through the shallows adds interest and dynamism to what might have been just another of the many photographs of this rusty hulk sitting in the sea.
But I do see (after I followed your advice to do a Google search) that the tide does recede way beyond this wreck so I can imagine that you might well have some pictures of the MV Irish Trader "stranded" on the sand if you continued to wait an hour or two longer.
Considering the appalling weather which we have been having in the last few days, you were fortunate to have such wonderful light yesterday. It has brought out some wonderful vibrant colours and strong contrasts. Your composition is excellent, your exposure perfect and the details and sharpness exquisite.
nikkitta (10418) 2014-01-03 11:55
A great composition, unexpected one ,it semms, waiting for the tide and also catching horses and their riders giving life at the ambiance
Truly eye catching capture for the color contrast and sharpness
All in all a capture to be proud of
Happy New Year
And yes, quite agree, croping the low part would be good
macjake (48279) 2014-01-03 16:34
I wish there were shipwrecks here in Vancouver!
this one's a beauty, but it'd be even better if the entire ship was still intact, although it has been 40 years!
the long wait was worth it I suppose, but in the end did you get the shipwreck photo you were hoping for?
I'm sure everyone is saying how awesome the light is, and they're damn right!

That's freedom and space, something I have always wanted to do - ride on a wide open beach - as displayed by those relaxed cantering riders. It looks like a good capture in the first place that you've retained just the right amount of detail throughout and even without that bit of rusty chunk behind, it works very well. They are the cherry on top so well set off against deep rich blue tones make this a fine shot of this well documented Irish beach. Great capture indeed, and tx to your useful narratives. Congrats.
jcpix (8296) 2014-01-04 21:15
Wow, so worth the wait...what a cinematic shot this turned out to be! I wonder though, was this perhaps intended as a cover for one of those grocery store romance novels? Is Fabio just off scene, bare chested, sitting atop a horse as well, with his golden locks gently blowing in the wind...just waiting to catch up to these young ladies and sweep them off their feet? :)
You could have had a fantastic shot with only the shipwrecked boat or the ladies themselves, but putting them together in one frame just takes this up a notch. Fantastic light, color and focus...you really nailed this one! With the tide filling the frame all the way to the bottom, were you standing in it while taking this one? Your patience has paid off well, this is a real winner...and not one I would have guessed under your genre, a most pleasant surprise. Compliments on an excellent photo! Hope your holidays were fun and filling, all the best in 2014.
Cheers from the winter "wonderland."
batalay (33859) 2014-01-05 2:23
The image is spectacular, pure poetry! The riders striding along the beach take for granted a remnant of the skeletal remains of the MV Irish Trader. It is remarkable that in just 40 years the salt water and changing weather conditions have destroyed the cargo ship.
Warm regards, Noel.
bona (11849) 2014-01-05 16:43
Wonderful photo! The colors, the elements on it! All is great. The old ship is a very curious thing to see.

Gidday dear Noel
Ooh as my dear old Zio Gianni says, "ahhhh me likes too much"! What a fantastic subject - actually make that plural, subjects. I have a thing for shipwrecks and this is such a brilliant example of that genre. The sun has warmed it up beautifully, contrasting with sea and sky exquisitely. Can I pinch it for me theme? And as if the shipwreck wasn't enough, you get the hot Irish cutties on the horses too, you patient fella you. (Did I say that right, cutty, not cutie?). In any event, it's a corker and you should be proud. And I for one thank you kindly for hanging around in that icy Irish winter for so long in order to share it with us. I hope there was a nice hot toddy (or cutty) waiting for you in a nearby pub :)
PS: sorry I've been a slacko with the critiques etc., I been Walkabout

this is so beautiful.love the light the pov the framing.great colors and timing too.i have never seen anything like the wrecked ship remain.

J'adore!
chawax (17282) 2014-01-07 13:23
A nixz scene with a very beautiful winter light. Anyway I think you gave too much space to the plain blue sky, which is not very interesting. I think a more rectangle format would fit the subject better. I will join a workshop to show you, tell me what you think about it;) Anyway I understand an irish sunny winter day is so rare that you wanted to show us this blue sky !
CLODO (27474) 2014-01-07 13:35
What a splash of colors! the riders don't take care of the remains of the boat still erected on the sand beach.
Sharpness and color purity!
adores (32138) 2014-01-11 15:48
I've seen photos of this boat before and your composition is really great here, with the two people riding their horses in foreground. Beautiful light and colours. A good work!
mcmtanyel (7297) 2014-01-11 20:01
This is a very eye-catching photo. It is not everyday that we associate horseback riding with shipwrecks. It looks like that ghost of a ship is neaking up behind the riders.
I wonder why they did not bother to remove the wreck.
maloutim (9619) 2014-01-12 0:11
What a lovely picture of these horse-riders in front of the famous shipwreck ! Beautiful blue color of the sky, sea and even foreshore.
I like the way you captured the sun on the horses'legs, the riders' faces and the ship's prow.
Congratulations for this capture and your patience which led to it.
serp2000 (35056) 2014-01-19 8:56
I can to say this is the best your post in 2014! I take off my hat... Excellent work, the composition is great! No words!
All the best wishes,

Magnificent composition and great blue scenery. Dramatic contrast between the young riders and the ruined ship. Really a good work.
All the best
yquem46 (37440) 2014-03-05 10:03
An excellent shot on every aspects
Nice colors very natural, not overdone, a luminous scenery, the compo with the 2 people quietly horse riding dynamically in the right direction in the image, in contrast with the rusty decayed wrecked ship
Bravo, very well thought and realized
best regards, have a nice evening
