Pictured here is a Bald Eagle that I photographed at a Falconry exhibition. The event was held in July 2011 at Ballinlough Castle in County Westmeath, and featured a lot of entertainment, including the Falconry itself, jousting with armor clad knights on horses, exhibitions of hunting dogs, and much more.
Falconry is a popular sport in Ireland, with exhibitions frequently featuring around the country at various festivals and events. Not surprisingly it is one of the biggest draws of the events it held in, as the birds on display are magnificent.
Whenever you visit an event in rural Ireland, there is a good chance you will get to see stunts and tricks performed by a variety of these birds, including Falcons, Eagles, kestrels and more.
This bird here was my own personal favorite of all the birds on display, as I think there is something so regal and noble about them. This guy was quite huge, and I would not like to be a rabbit around him were he in the wild, especially with that rather dangerous looking beak.
The Bald Eagle is a bird of prey found in North America. A sea eagle, it has two known sub-species and forms a species pair with the White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.
The Bald Eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down and snatches from the water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species, up to 4 meters (13 ft) deep, 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) wide, and one metric ton (1.1 tons) in weight. Sexual maturity is attained at the age of four to five years.
Bald Eagles are not actually bald; the name derives from an older meaning of "white headed". The adult is mainly brown with a white head and tail. The sexes are identical in plumage, but females are larger than males. The beak is large and hooked. The plumage of the immature is brown.
Thanks for looking!

Having had a few "goes" at trying to shoot (photographically, I mean!!) birds of prey, I realise just how terribly difficult it can be. These amazing creatures don't sit still, they are constantly on the move and when they fly, they do so in three dimensions and at enormous speed and with amazing dexterity.
So you have done very well to get this shot and to capture it so very well. The most important bit of all - that keen eye - is in stunningly sharp focus and that matters more than absolutely anything else in a shot like this. And that vicious looking hooked beak - that's in perfect focus too.
An excellent shot with stunning sharpness and clarity, good colours, perfect exposure and a nice and unobtrusive background too.
Oh, yes, and a very good note - as always!

Ciao e buona serata

Fabulous shot of this majestic bird!!
I love the way you have maintained sharp focus on the beak and the eye of the bird which are obviously the most potent weapons of the bird. It has one stern look.
Nice detailing on the plumage of the bird which stands out well against the blurred background.
Your photo here has successfully portrayed the fierce and aggressive nature of the bird which keeps it on top of the food chain in the bird family.
A detailed and educative note as always.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Noel, Fantastic photo of this proud bird, yes, it has something regal and noble. This intensive look! And when the bird is sitting quiet then it is a great opportunity for good shot. In flight it is for me too difficult. Such shows are very interesting, I saw some in Australia.
have nice Christmas preparations

Quel magnifique portrait de cet aigle, symbole de la puissance américaine par excellence. On a presque envie de flatter ses plumes tellement elles sont nettes. Et quel regard perçant.

Your close-up photo of the bald eagle is one of the best examples of nature photography I've seen in months. The note reveals how little I knew about the creature that is native to my part of the world.
To make the photo even more dramatic, you could have made the background much darker, so that only the head of the eagle shows up. In a photograph I posted 4-5 years ago, I took a photo of friend, a Nobel Prize winner, "Toasting Einstein". Behind him in the photo was the clapboard of a house, a bit distracting. Although it's not a great photo, it does suppress the distracting parallel lines.
Warm regards and Happy Holidays,

Hello Noel - I am not a fan of bird photographs but I must congratulate you on this fine specimen. You have captured a super shot with pin-sharp detail on the bird's head. His beak, eye and feathers are finely detailed. Don't you think he has a haughty expression?.... he couldn't care less that you are taking his portrait!
Warm regards Rosemary

this is a very lovely and interesting portrait, full of charm and character. I like very much the depth and sharpness with which the eagle stands out against the neutral, even and rustic backdrop. The textures are very fine and the attentive eye is captivating. You must be somewhere in the reflection:) Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,

What a handsome eagle! He looks very self-assured, and I love the detail that you captured. His feathers are beautiful, and what a beak! Nice close view and tight crop. The eagle is the star of this photo, as he should be. :-)

This pic. caught me long ago, and time to write about.
Though I'd not want to be a rabbit myself when he is around - it has a very attractive and impressing appearance, and you managed fine details of his (not bold) white feathers, eye and beak.
A superior portrait given to this magnificent bird.
Have a nice weekend,
