Pictured here is a building known as the Anchorite Cell, a part of the Fore Abbey complex in the village of Fore, County Westmeath.
The main Abbey is built on a marshland in the shadow of the Ben of Fore and the Ben of Houndslow in a beautiful valley. When approaching the site from the village, it appears as if the valley is littered with Monastic ruins, between the abbey itself, the 6th century church of St Feichen up the hill of Houndslow, the remains of the protective walls, the Columbarium and pictured here, the anchorite cell.
The abbey was founded by St Feichin in the year 630. Feichin himself died of the yellow plague in the 660's, but it is believed that at that time, up to 300 monks and 2000 students were in residence at this place. Between 771 and 1169, Fore was burnt at least twelve times. Because of its relationship with a French abbey, Fore was regularly seized by the English authorities as "alien Property" when England was at war with France.
In Irish folklore, the complex is known for the 7 wonders of Fore, which are
The monastery built upon the bog.
The mill without a race (the waters of Lough Lene flows from the hill).
The water that flows uphill.
The tree that will not burn.
The water that doesn’t boil.
The anchorite in a cell.
The lintel-stone raised by St. Fechin’s prayers.
The anchorite cell (or anchorites chapel) pictured here is a stone chapel which was built onto a stone cell that was occupied by hermits until the 17th century. There is a small plaque inside the chapel commemorating the very last hermit known in Ireland, a man named Patrick Beglan. He occupied the Anchorite's cell in 1616. An anchorite is one who lives the reclusive life of a hermit for religious reasons.
This shot is taken from the cemetery in the church of St Feicin, looking up the hill at the cell. The main abbey itself is in the opposite direction.
Thanks for looking!

Ce carré est bien composé et les teintes présentes dans le ciel créent une atmosphère très particulière.

Amazingly this historical monastery built almost a millenium and a half ago is still standing, witness to numerous wars and invasions. The gloomy atmosphere adds to the emotions and your historical information complements the ancient architecture.
Thanks for sharing,

Hello Noel, very nice image here. I love the silhouette of this ancient building. Good low POV that allows you to get the whole building and part of the surrounding areas. The sky is almost unreal. Good take.

A fine moment collected, Noel, a unique glow on the sky, gave an exquisite opportunity for a great contrast.
The Abbey on the green hill beautifully shown from the chosen POV, and the light condition at the time taken, even enhanced the imposing sight.

Well, as a "land lubber" (thanks for the laughs) this locale certainly places you on terra firma. :)
A composition worth praise yet again, I've always admired your sense of subject placement and overall ease of viewing, everything seems to just look and feel proper. And what's this, another awesome sky! The colors and light give life to these ruins...and now that I think of it, this being marshland...there might actually be life, in the twisted form of a sea creature!! O.K., I'll put my goofy imagination back in check.
The foreground does actually compliment the sky in terms of additional color and traditional associations with the Emerald Isles lush landscapes. A soothing and reflective moment captured, and a scene full of history and natural beauty...well deserving of your lens. Great work! Enjoy the new day...yay, we made it to the end of the week. Whew!
Cheers from grass-less Phoenix,

like this! Your POV is well chosen as it makes this take on an almost Tolkien ambience and when set against this amazing sky the analogy is all the more imaginable. The sky is so unusual and your management of the light makes the backdrop other-worldly too. A beautiful and artistic image, presented so creatively.
Have a good weekend - B.

A magnificent sky, just like a painting, as the ideal backdrop for the clear and sharp picture of the abbey tower on the hill slope.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao dear Noel
I think I saw this lovely photo on your Images of Ireland page. What an unusual and beautiful place, not just for it's obvious spectacular landscape but also its remarkable geographic attributes. You did well here, in post processing it seems you have lightened the FG whilst darkening the sky. And you have done this very well, and very subtly. The unusual clouds formations add to the atmosphere and I like the almost pastel tones in the sky. Excellent note as usual. Thanks for sharing, have a beautiful day.
