Pictured here is a building known as the Anchorite Cell, a part of the Fore Abbey complex in the village of Fore, County Westmeath.
The main Abbey is built on a marshland in the shadow of the Ben of Fore and the Ben of Houndslow in a beautiful valley. When approaching the site from the village, it appears as if the valley is littered with Monastic ruins, between the abbey itself, the 6th century church of St Feichen up the hill of Houndslow, the remains of the protective walls, the Columbarium and pictured here, the anchorite cell.
The abbey was founded by St Feichin in the year 630. Feichin himself died of the yellow plague in the 660's, but it is believed that at that time, up to 300 monks and 2000 students were in residence at this place. Between 771 and 1169, Fore was burnt at least twelve times. Because of its relationship with a French abbey, Fore was regularly seized by the English authorities as "alien Property" when England was at war with France.
In Irish folklore, the complex is known for the 7 wonders of Fore, which are:
The monastery built upon the bog.
The mill without a race (the waters of Lough Lene flows from the hill).
The water that flows uphill.
The tree that will not burn.
The water that doesn’t boil.
The anchorite in a cell.
The lintel-stone raised by St. Fechin’s prayers.
The anchorite cell (or anchorites chapel) pictured here is a stone chapel which was built onto a stone cell that was occupied by hermits until the 17th century. There is a small plaque inside the chapel commemorating the very last hermit known in Ireland, a man named Patrick Beglan. He occupied the Anchorite's cell in 1616. An anchorite is one who lives the reclusive life of a hermit for religious reasons.
This shot is taken from the cemetery in the church of St Feicin, looking up the hill at the cell. The main abbey itself is in the opposite direction.
Thanks for looking!

a wonderful upward view that draws the viewer into the frame so smoothly. The antique building makes a very attractive focal point, its features and textures are very clear and one would only wish they could approach and inspect it closer. I like very much the light reflected on the clouds, brightening up the desolate place before it's wrapped in darkness. The deep and moody colours are wonderful. The atmosphere, affected by the lighting and your note, is enchanting. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

Lovely dramatic shot created by the low angle and spectacular sky with soft colours throughout. It must have been quite a lonely spot in the 1600's and that sense of openness in the landscape makes the small chapel feel even smaller than it is. A beautiful atmosphere you have created Noel.

Great choice of POV: having the building at a higher ground increases the overall effect of the ancient Cell peacefully dominating the hill.
The cluds against the blue sky add to the atmosphere.
Thanks for sharing!

interessante la diagonale del terreno che va nel senso opposto delle diagonali tracciate dalle nuvole in cielo.
Ottima composizione, un po' di spazio maggiore al cielo, la costruzione leggermente decentrata e il pov originale.

Mystic and stimulating view of Anchorite Cell, perched on the green hill top with a saturated blue sky and sunset cloud backdrop.
And a fine historical note to add value to the whole scene.
Keep up the good works,

Even your pictures that don't show something from a cemetery, still involve a cemetery...you ghoul! :) You must unconsciously walk into one without even realizing it at this point. ha Well, your placement amongst the departed has produced another magnificent image none the less.
Always a more emphatic scene when there's an angle that cuts the frame, and I like that you've composed this one to show more of the sky. I believe it adds a greater sense of open space, and the placement of the Cell is right in the sweet spot. We must be living in modern times, the first thing I thought when I saw the title was to look for a mobile phone somewhere within this picture!? Was this to be a "Where's Waldo" kind of game....find the cell phone hidden somewhere along the hillside??
Always a blissful color combo with the blues and greens...and the touches of yellow highlights top it off nicely in the clouds. Another impressive hand held shot with a slower shutter speed...teach me your ways! :) Have a great day.
Cheers from Arid-zona,

Hello Noel - Your shot appeals to me not only for the placement of the Anchorite Cell on the junction between heaven and earth but also for the amazing mackerel sky. The mood here conveys the feeling that earth is dark and somber but heaven is light and lively. Nice one! Warm regards Rosemary

Wonderful view of the strange structure against fabulous sky. But I am interested with these 7 wonders: water that dosn't boil and flows uphill? Gorgeous composition.

I must say you couldn´t choose a better POV to present us the Anchorite Cell.Really enjoy this perspective and color scheme of the scene. It helps you to create unique, for me also quite mysterious mood(maybe because of the sky-these clouds in the right part of the image look fabulous!)

I was travelling in winter mountains with very limited access to internet, this caused that I missed your latest beautiful photos.
Excellent view up to interesting abbey. I like the superb light and the excellent contrast against blue sky (enhanced by the perfect low angle viewpoint). Very well done.

Good upward pointing POV, to show us this old building. The backdrop of the wonderful sky with these lovely cloud formations is so beautiful that it draws the maximum attention. The building seems to be dominating the surroundings from the top of the hill. A very nice photo with a well written informative photo about the place. Thanks for sharing.

another one of these very interesting notes, and a subject that i probably would have otherwise ignored if I were on the road and noticed it.
Your photos from your homeland are always educational.
I wonder how you see the world when you travel, that'll be interesting too....any travel plans in 2014?
wonderful story here, I've learned something new once again. fine photo all around of this unique subject

so this is how I imagine always Ireland - plenty of space, green hills, ruins of the castles and dramatic sky which almost itself is not sure what face to make. The abbey presented by you is not massive but actually very representative and quite romantic too. Congratulations for creating so much atmosphere with only few elements of very successful composition.
Thanks for sharing

It must be a place full of history and atmosphere. This light makes it even more misterious. I like this pov and the colours.
