Photographer’s Note

The exterior facade of the Clarion Hotel Sligo, a newly renovated hotel that has a fascinating history. Its Elizabethan facade is quite unique. The building is reportedly a historically-preserved formal mental institution. It was quite extensively restored and renovated, so the accomodations weren't nearly as stark as what former patients would have experienced! The building itself was built in 1848, just before the famine. There's also a small chapel, just separated from the main building, where many weddings are held. It would have probably been more ominous in black and white, or on a more cloudy day, but I think the sunlight balances the light and dark of the rather heavy and imposing architecture.
