Pictured here is Gormanston Castle in County Meath, it lies just south of Drogheda and about 30km north of Dublin. It is on the Meath side of the Meath / Dublin border and close to the river Delvin.
The site has been occupied by a castle since the 1400's and had been the ancestral home of the Preston Family until the 1940's. The castle we see here dates from 1786 and it was built by the Preston family on the exact site of a former castle. It is an impressive building, quadrangle in plan and with towers on three of the four corners. The front elevation of the building is three stories in height and the main entrance is flanked by two more narrow towers.
According to legend, the foxes of County Meath would gather around the castle when the head of the Preston family is about to die. There is a fox present in the family crest of the Preston family. This is said to be in thanks for the protection from ravenous predators of a vixen and her young cubs by a previous Lord Gormanston. While this unusual sight is said to have been witnessed many times over the past century, it is more than 30 years since it was last reported.
The Preston family managed to hold onto their estate from the 1400's right through to the 1940's, despite being Catholics. Over the years many Catholic families had their lands removed and were made exiles in Ireland. The head of the Preston famil is known as Viscount Gormanston, the premier Viscount of Ireland. That title is currently held by Jenico Preston who lives in London.
In 1947, the castle was sold to the Franciscan order who developed a school here. The castle itself opened as a school in 1954 and a new additional college building was built in 1955. The castle remains as a school today, with over 500 students in attendance.
In addition to the castle itself, there is also a very spooky Yew Tree walk which leads from the castle to the cemetery where previous Franciscan priests lie at rest.
Thanks for looking!

This is one impressive castle. I like the point of view, though I wonder if there is some reason why you didn't move slightly further to the left to include all of the castle, maybe there were cars parked behind the topiary? I like very much the nuances of tone and detail to be observed in the brickwork and the repeating motifs of the windows. The image is pleasantly lit and has superb colours and detail. Thanks for sharing, enjoy the Easter break.

such an imposing and fascinating school building with long and important history too. The perspective of the Castle and the arrangement of all the elements that surround it in the frame are superb. A deep and graphic foreground, fine, sharp textures and lovely, moody colours make this view so atmospheric and attractive. Very fine work, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, Happy Easter to you and your dear ones!

Beau point de vue sur cet imposant château. La lumière donne un beau contraste de couleurs de la pierre et du parterre. Bien fait.

Hello Noel, Very interesting note. Amazing to have such a castle as a family possession. And must be great to be a student of this school Spectacular composition. Interesting story about foxes. I would be scare seeing them around the castle. Strange big bush on the right side.
Have a nice Easter Monday

Un superbe château médiéval que tu as très joliment mis en image.

Whenever I watch this type of castle I'm torn between the beauty of the building and heating costs!. Joking aside this is a very nice picture that pays homage to the building.
Thank you for sharing.

now that is a school I would have been only too proud to attend. It looks both formidable as a place of learning but also compellingly majestic. Superbly composed shot that sweeps us into the grounds so irresistibly. Trying to imagine how I would feel arriving here on my first day at a new school - scared would probably be not an accurate enough adjective to describe it! Stunning place and capture!
Have a good week - B.

Is there ever an end to all those wonderful country estates and castles in Ireland, I surely hope not.
This is another superb building and as usual your knowledge of the place is amazing and very informative. I really enjoy to read your extensives notes.
have a great day

remote Clown College...now thats funny! good one!
now its a school!!!???
I wonder how it looks on the inside...because how does a Family home transform into school rooms?
hmmm....I wonder if they had to change the rooms around alot. Doesn't really seem to fit, but then again what the heck do i know!
Looking at this former castle/home, now I want to build myself a Quadrangle! i love just saying it :)
beautiful home, majestic, powerful, proud-looking, it certainly catches the eye doesn't it. Perhaps one of my favorites from your posted castles.

Hello Noel - This castle looks to be 'as new'... no crumbling edifice this and obviously well loved and looked after. Your shot is beautifully managed and your corner-wise composition shows off maximum architectural detail. The balance could be better if the bush was not so 'heavy' looking but reading your note to Stephen I understand that the bush was better than the alternative!
I hope you spent a pleasant Easter break.

Two thing called my atention , the castle so similar at the one where Downton Abbey is turned (towers) and the disturbing dark green bush at the right ( understand it after reading your answer)
Great POV to show the castle and sorroundings with still golden vegetation
Informative note also, a real pity it is now a college
