Pictured here is the entrance to St Patrick's Catholic church in the town of Trim, Co Meath
Built between 1890 and 1905 it is Gothic Revival in style and presents an imposing landmark in the town, with its immense steeple rises over the surrounding land. It is noted for its beautiful stained glass windows which depict the crucifixion and the history of Trim.
It has always been that the doors to a church in Ireland are never locked so that those who seek solace can always find it. Sadly, in todays world this is no longer the case in many places. Particularly in the cities, parish churches must often remain locked to keep out those who would do damage.
In this church though, the doors always remain open, so one can ramble in and out and take in the beautiful light and solemn quiet of this sanctuary.

Buon inizio settimana

It is indeed a sad state of affairs these days that even churches have to keep their doors locked to keep out those who would rob or carry out deeds of vandalism. How times change. In fact, reading your note, I was immediately reminded of Croick Church, a tiny little church way up in Sutherlandshire in the far north of Scotland. During the Highland Clearances, many homeless local families spent a winter camping out in the churchyard as they thought the church too holy and sacred to use for shelter - and many of them died from the cold. It's a long time since I visited it but I must go back sometime with a camera because there are still some bits of writing etched into the outsides of the windows - words written by those people who suffered and died there. And, again, it's nowadays such a poor state of affairs that those very windows and the etchings of those wretched people now have to be covered with protective sheets of perspex to stop vandals defacing them.
Anyway, Noel, this is a lovely photograph, very well taken with the half-door and its colourful glass panelling making up just a little more than half of the frame, the distant aisle , pews and window of the church making a fine background. You have controlled the exposure very well here, the light and colours are delightful and the details and sharpness are excellent.

Hello Noel, very inteesting image here. I just love the painted glass in the close up. Lovely colors, good take.

Excellent composition with the stained glass patterns in beautiful shapes and gorgeous colours. The inclusion of the blurred interior with the other glass window has much increased the visual appeal of this superb picture. Your note reveals a sad reality of the present times.
Thanks for sharing and have a great new week ahead.

Une intéressante idée de composition.Peut-être que le vitrail en arrière-plan, un peu surexposé, attire trop le regard et qu'il est possible de l'assombrir un peu en post-traitement?

Also in our churches in Poland the doors are very often locked and sometimes it is not possible to make any shots inside, when they are open only during the service. But what can be done... Excellent composition with the blurred background. Nice colours, superb light.
Warm regrads from Warsaw

love the way you have composed this, pure genius! It is a superbly tantalising image that just makes the viewer want to enter and see the full glory of the interior here. An image of two halves that is perfectly balanced and executed to marvellous effect. An original and inspiring piece of imagery, my congratulations.
Have a great week - B.

A fine image, good shot selection and the eye popping colours, a telling hint of the bigger picture Brilliant detail using the best exposure under available light and shallow dof. A fine capture screaming out for attention!! Excellent shot and tfs

A sad reflection on modern life that churches have to be kept locked, but there is a similar story over here. An unusual composition that was no doubt horrendous to expose for. As it is, you have done very well indeed, producing a very innovative image with much merit to it.

Ciao e buona settimana

It is very clever composition that shows half of the photo in perfect sharpness and the other half hazy. I like this beautiful colorful stained glass window. Great quality photo.

I don't know if you already had the concept in mind for this picture to match your note, but one fits the other to perfection! I love what you've done here to express the open door policy in such an original manner. An image with two distinct halves, yet both are the same...if that even makes a shred of sense?? :)
The presentation of a solid, colorful and detailed foreground subject that works in unison with the open, slightly blurred and lengthy perspective in the right half of the frame is brilliant. Also beneficial is the play of sunlight in the background. A pity in this day and age that there is truly not a place that can remain open 24/7 without the fear of vandalism or crime. At least we still get that visualized association through this imagery. Very well done mate! Enjoy the new day ahead. All the best.
Cheers from way over yonder,

Hi Noel - I like your thinking here and the way you have used your DOF is ideal as it gives the shot a real feel for the 'open door' welcome to the church. The glass panel in the door is richly decorated and colourful and the design echoes with the large Gothic shapes of the interior.
Subhogen (4067) 2014-04-15 7:19
Excellent closeup shot of the ajar door. Perfect control over DOF to let us allow enough details of the OOF interiors of the Church. Good sharp focus and nice use of the backlight to bring out the intricate details of the beautiful glass painting. Even in India temples were left unlocked and unguarded hoping that thieves would not dare steal because of their fear of the Gods. But now such temples have become easy targets for gangs who steal the golden ornaments of deities without any resistance. A well thought out and well executed image. Thanks for sharing.

this is a lovely picture with an interesting composition and a well divided frame. The part of the door we see on the left side is beautiful, you've captured the colours, the textures and the luminosity of the glass superbly. I also like the depth of the right part and the warm, diffused light that you mention in your note and that seems to be as important for the atmosphere as the character of the place itself. Churches can be oases of calmness even for non-religious people or people from different religions. Your picture reflects this fact and is inviting. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

Hello dear Noel,
Wonderfull capture and even nicer title !
Very well observed and captured.
TFS and best regards

This is a wonderful photograph, incorporating the sharp, beauty of the door and the blurred, inferred welcome of the interior. It does revive memories of a church's doors being always open ... and they were. Sadly, today's new god 'money' means that sacred places are no longer respected; anything and everything can be a target!
My warm regards,
When you build your very own castle, as a fan of such buildings, I hope you invite me to your castle warming! I'll keep it in mind!
photoray (13981) 2014-04-15 16:11
Very artful stain glass entry, then the wonder of the beyond interior, a tease but obviously worthwhile to visit in person.
Most people need sanctuary. In my youth it was the library, and now it is wilderness.
Thanks for sharing,

very nice the colourul stained glass from the entrance to St. Patrick's church.I like the design, the light and the colour management as the clarity of the scene.

Super Pov, on to this fantastic church door, splendid it being half open so we can glimpse inside as well.
Sad to read the vandalism that some guys cause.
jhm (155370) 2014-04-17 5:09
I am very gladly that their the church open, in Belgium are all churches close, everything becomes stolen, incredible, through east Europian gangs.
Sharpness and clarity his real pleasant.
Also your colour glass makes these picture attractive.
Very well composition, TFS.

You have had me hunting smiling crocodiles !
I am drawn to your ecclesiastical image- maybe it is the Good Friday influence. Such a shame that a place of solace and refuge should need to be locked, but I think that is likely true the world over today.
This is a clever composition- such sharpness of detail and great control of the backlighting through the stained glass. I enjoy the repetition of arches in the door and window beyond- simply lovely
m (0) 2014-04-18 13:35
a very good picture, the bright stained glass of the door seems to repeat the perspective down the aisle. Or vice versa:) Excellent theme choice for the weekend!
Hanssie (10856) 2014-04-19 1:04
That's a very nice one, Noel,
half the door which is the main object but
a view into the "unsharp church",
what a great idea ! !
elenimavrandoni (0) 2014-04-22 13:17
Noel, your thought is beautiful, your title very appropriate and it is nice and very comforting to know that this door always remains open, because we all need it!!
a great point of view and the contrast between the sharp part of the door and the faded interior is what makes your image more special respecting the sacred part of the church!!
COSTANTINO (66639) 2014-04-22 21:56
Hello my dear friend

open so one can ramble in and out and take in the
beautiful light and solemn quiet of this sanctuary
nice for the doors remain open but unfortunately

pleasant decorated door welldone and wellseen

I like the idea and your composition! You're showing part of the beautiful door and you also let us look inside the church. Good focus and a very suitable title also!
