Photographer's Note

Here are the ruins of Burrishoole Friary close to Newport in county Mayo. This dominican friary dedicated to Saint Mary was built in 1470 by Richard de Burgo of Turlough. It is at the back of Clew Bay, on the road from Westport to Achill Island, in a wonderful natural site at the estuary of Furnace Lough. This is one example of the many ruins of friaries you can find everywhere in Ireland.
