the sky road is a 12km drive along the rugged county galway coast, west of clifden in connemara. the scenery on a clear day is breathtaking with little islands and white sandy beaches seemingly around every corner.
the road is very narrow in places so its not really possible to do this in a large tour bus. i reckon the best way to see it would be by bicycle (if you don't mind going up hills).

Good Morning Brian,
Your pov is an excellent choice, securing the f/g but presenting great depth for the spectacular views out over the islands and the sea.
The sky and billowing clouds are as important as the land scenery.
Have a lovely Sunday.
Hope you're not iced up, too,
bema (26425) 2012-02-05 6:19

Hello Brian ,
A splendid panorama of a beautiful coastal landscape , typically irish . The sky is supeb, too .
chawax (20760) 2012-02-05 6:41
I often heard about this place as one of the most beautiful in Ireland, in particular at sunset. But I've been twice there and only had awful weather, either rainy or foggy ! I looks very beautiful when the weather is good. Just a shame you put centered too much the horizon line.
Have a nice day,

I have visited this area about five years ago and I hoped to revisit it again last year but in the end the weather discouraged me. Beautiful capture with great well saturated colors. Amazing POV to show the incredible coast. I like the subtle painted sky. No wonder it is called the Sky Road :)
Personally I would not recommend anybody to bike those narrow roads there. There are so many accidents. Speed limits in Ireland are on most roads similar without any regard for the quality of the road so the drivers are quite often very fast and just behind a sudden turn squeezed between two tight walls they may have a choice: hit a car driving towards you or kill the biker just in front of you...

This is a classic landscape/seascape but by the word classic, I don't mean ordinary by any means.
Everything about this picture tells that the scene has been well observed and the picture well thought out and composed. Beautiful colours, perfect exposure, stunning detail and sharpness and a gorgeous sky to top it off. And an interesting note too - it just makes me want to visit this lovely place.
golus (2893) 2012-02-06 14:13
Shot of a fabulous place with a well chose POV and great composition. Appealing color tones with marvellous puffy coluds up in the sky. I liked how the residents effectively farmed the small area of land. Very well done. TFS.

Amazing landscape with perfect layout and perfect ligth management.
Good that this beautiful corner on earth has not too many modern connections, orherwise the existing atmosphere would be ruined very soon !
Go ahead with biking !!
TFS and best regards

this really is a breathtaking view and your photo is superb! The point of view offers us a fascinating landscape and seascape with a great variety of interesting spots to dwell. There's excellent clarity everywhere and beautiful colours. I also like the waves lacing rocks and beaches and the glimpse of bright sky over the voluminous clouds. Well done!
All the best,

This photo is truly up to your usual high standard. There is always this dream like quality which accompanies your images. It is not simply beautiful, it is not simply wonderful but the image quality is always surpassing in its own way. I still remember one of the very first images I had the privileged to encounter. I think it was an image of a swan in flight. This photo also has THAT quality which is shared equally among your photos. The horizon depicted in this very image and the rich texture captured in the foreground, everything is gathered carefully to create THAT quality. The scale of the panorama, and the elegance of this image, one could look at this photo for a long time without ever getting tired of it. What makes the images the way they are is something to be discovered. For now, I could only say that I love the images in your gallery, they do their magic ever so effortlessly.
With my very best and an utmost compliment,
Have a very pleasant evening, Brian

beautiful scenary from Ireland, i like so much the well satured colors in actractive contrast between, you chose a good POV and good light for capture this wonderful stretch of coast,
jimkil (1706) 2012-02-08 1:05
Was around the Galway & Mayo coast in June, the weather was non existent.. as it usually is!! The weather looks great for this capture, I particularly like this middle coast with it depth and detail. Must be tough to live on this part of the coast with the rough atlantic ocean, but those brave people in the bottom left can do it.
Fine landscape man.
delpeoples (59426) 2012-02-08 2:05
Ahh now this is the best of Ireland, and what a fantastic POV you achieved - Jeez you must do alot of climbing. The colours, the depth and the light management are all very impressive. I've read about the beauty of Clifden, certainly one to put on the hit list.
Thanks for sharing, have a lovely day

a picturesque view with spectacular composition, the colours and lights are very nice, the depth of the photo is superb, romantic atmosphere with superb POV, the clouds are beautiful too, Tfs! Have a nice weekend! Kellemes hétvégét kívánok!

Excellent depth!!! The colours are also amazing.
ChrisJ (117195) 2012-02-11 1:50
Here the division into roughly equal halves works, proving that it's not always necessary to follow the general rule of thirds. Probably because of that dominant white cloud taking up 3/4 of the top & the sliver of blue sky in the top quadrant. Good high pov with excellent sharpness. The yellow green vegetation contrasts well against the blue sea & sky. Tfs!
La_Tulipe (2798) 2012-02-11 15:59
Un très beau panorami qui offre un graphisme grandiose et un mélange de couleurs très naturelles et contrastantes.
Un peu de brume à l'horizon ferme bien la composition.
i9l2y1m8a8t3 (4814) 2012-02-11 18:35
Brian, this is one amazing place. The POV gives us a nice breathtaking view. The islands are quite spectacular, I guess going on by bike would be really nice though the uphills would be really challenging. This one is definitely a haven for photo ops. Beautiful colors, sharp, and clear capture! TFS
patdeph (35748) 2012-02-12 5:42
Yes, I think I could do it in bicycle, if it's only 12 km, but I suppose that it must be very difficult. But what a beautiful landscape to admire during the effort! The colors, the light and the clouds are splendid.
tatadalou (7459) 2012-02-12 9:46
You have found a great perspective on this landscape by land and sea. The bar of clouds brings something to the beauty of the picture.
Cricri (123650) 2012-02-13 10:10
My best regards.
cdmonson (5244) 2012-02-23 12:02
I remember this spot. Fantastic view. You got a better shot than I did--I was there in midafternoon on a half hazy, half sunny day. Love that little bit of headland in the distance, and those cottages tot he right, but my favorite part of the shot is the very Caribbean-looking water on the right.
Thanks for sharing.
Waylim (25502) 2012-02-23 23:37
This is a beautiful view of the rugged landscape with wide open view form up high. Good light exposing the landscape perfectly, but still some beautiful clouds with patches of pale blue sky. The vantage point really give a good impression of the whole area of scatter villages and natural landscape with some patches of farmland by the sea. A typical Ireland beauty.
holmertz (57285) 2012-03-17 11:58
This area must be where a friend of mine and I rented bicycles 44 years ago. We spent part of a day going along the sea and across the moors, setting out from Clifden. It was a nice day but returning to town we faced a very strong wind that made the going really tough. Unfortunately I wasn't able in those days to take any pictures nearly as sharp and fine as this. It really gives full credit to the beautiful views and the fine colours of the sea and the fields.
korbee (6619) 2012-03-17 14:57
if theres an heaven, this could be a very good example Brian :=]],the full sun on the green lands and the village in combination with the ocean,it looks great!
I think the the road and the village are really bringing the photo alive.

EstudioChispa (2178) 2013-10-22 6:51
There is so much of interest here, I know I will not touch it all. Besides the technically brilliant presentation of the scene, what jumps out to me is that much of this land appears to be under cultivation. As someone raised in the wheat fields of Kansas with a dread for what too much salt can do to the productivity of soil, I am amazed that these fields, which surely must be bathed daily in salt spray, are under the plow.
The other thing I have to mention is one of my favorite Richard Thompson songs, "From Galway to Graceland." Thank you for now providing me with a mental picture to bookend Elvis's gaudy Graceland gates.
Finally, let me report that I will study this shot (and many of your others) as examples of "just enough" post-processing. PP is a skill I am trying to learn, and my tendency to date is not to stop before I have gone too far. To whatever degree you have enhanced this sky, it is very subtle and delicate. A fine example for a novice like me!
