This is Donegal Bay as seen from the Old Graveyard near the Pier. I have previously uploaded some photos of this area as I found it so strange to see an almost tropical sunset during the cold Christmas of 2008. Within this graveyard are the ruins of a Franciscan Friary dating from 1474, but the graveyard itself is many hundreds of years older, dating back to 1000 AD. It is here in the Franciscan Friary that the Annals of The Masters was compiled, which is an attempt at the collection of Irish writing dating from 2958 BC to 1616. The Annals were finally completed by the friars and moved to County Leitrim. Red Hugh O'Donnell built the Friary and occupied it until the English took occupation in 1601. It was seriously damaged by the besieging O'Donnell army and then finally abandoned after the Flight of The Earls.

the most effect to me makes the shadow of the stone cross. What a mood, and this was at Christmas? Wow!
Thanks a lot for sharing
Have a fine week and take care

I thought it was in Greece!
Nice sunset colors, good POV with the 2 graves and good light management to have matter in the shadows.

beautiful sunset. I like the subtle colors of the sky. The sun setting behind that peninsula looks so romantic. Very well used silhouettes from the graveyard. Excellent composition. Full of special mood, very typical for Ireland,

Micsoda hangulat! A kompozíció a klasszikus festmények hangulatát idézi. Gratulálok! Tfs! Have a nice day!

i've always said, even from the beginning of my time here on TE, that there aren't enough graveyard photos.
they can produce wonderful images and atmospheres.
not too morbid is it?
anyways...you've got an interesting mixture of motifs here.
you have death, and life (start of a new day) with the sunset, leading to a new sunrise.
i love that
its a thoughtful/reflective type of atmosphere, with excellent colours.
have a great day

Ciao cara Lisa,
Bravissima!
Ciao, passa un buon mercoledě, mia cara amica!

hello dear Lisa,
what a great idea of POV, a beautiful composition, amazing atmosphere at this beautiful sunset, beautiful colors, excellent framing,
subhendu_bagchi (16590) 2010-04-20 17:25
you have captured this sunset photo nicely with a fine point of view. Colour of setting sun is superb. Semi silhouetted graveyard stones are nice at foreground. Very well composed shot.
Waylim (22349) 2010-04-20 18:45
Beautiful and tranquil image with touch of melancholic mood and atmosphere contributed by the location of a cemetery. Good composition, beautiful rich tone but very natural. Great control on the ray of light from the setting sun.
phwall (6781) 2010-04-20 19:34
Hand me a pinacolada and I'd truly be in heaven, well heavens waiting room going by the foreground graves.
I think you are turning me towards vertical framing, this one looks so good.
Just the right amount of light on the foreground, you can still make out the objects but you've retained the silhouette effect synonymous with sunset images. Yes, yes, I've been using a Thesaurus to get away from the usual platitudes.
Nice work old chook.
Pierre the merciful.

and suddenly you took a huge jump and you found in Ireland.Nice the sunset view with the white structures on the foreground to stands out well against the subdued light of the day.Well done.

Hi Lisa, I trust that you are well. I like the images that you have started posting on Ireland- what a beautiful country. It just goes to show that photographs are ageless and are as good today as they were years ago.. Very clever shot to include the gravestones with the setting sun ( not often seen in Ireland).. Well done Have a great evening Rich
bema (25936) 2010-04-23 11:10
this one will be found in my favourites, really a very romantic, charming and moody capture, which pleases me a lot..
have a nice weekend, see you, Bernd

smart composition and a fantastic atmosphere,
vjmite (3208) 2010-04-26 5:07
Beautiful colours in the sky and water, and interesting silhouettes that tell us this is Ireland. I think I would have cropped some of the dark foreground out, or maybe I would have tried to brighten it up a little. Very informative note.
burraburra (1183) 2010-04-27 23:15
I comment no other than to say, Fantastico.
I have heard folklore talk about the 'Beast of Donegal'? Wonder if that is real or not.
Cheers Big Ears.
ikeharel (37190) 2011-02-23 8:18
Beautiful bay on sunset, and the tumbstones silhouettes.
Just as sun almost disappeared.
I'd cropp most of lower dark part.
Noel_Byrne (7209) 2012-07-13 4:29
Such a classically beautiful and Irish scene. The composition of the cross and the ruins is really idyllic, and the sunset adds that extra little bit. Beautiful capture.
