This is Fanad Lighthouse in the north of County Donegal. The area is a very untouched and windswept part of Ireland and although there are caravan parks for tourists, it experiences nothing like the hordes of tourists one sees in Kerry and Dublin.
The origins of the name Fanad are lost in time, but it is thought that it derives from the Gaelic meaning "sloping ground". Although this place has a population of only 700, 30% of it is Irish-speaking.
I had a lot of trouble with the diffused light here, and so used a 10 stop filter to try and lift it.

Superbe photo. le paysage est magnifique et la combinaison filtre-pose longue donne un très bel effet.

Very beautiful view of the lighthouse overlooking the sea. Its white colour contrasts very well with the overcast sky. Like the way you have managed to show details from the depth of the fjord despite not so brilliant lighting conditions. Good use of the vertical format to show the sea inlet along with the brooding sky. Great shot with natural light and colours. Thanks for sharing.

This is a fine shot, capturing all the atmosphere of this lonely lighthouse, in the dull weather when it might have been useful. You have set the scene incredibly well with the rugged f/g, before we reach the strongly positioned, proud lighthouse, erect under the ominous sky.
You have brought back happy memories of a holiday we spent quite near here, sadly, before my interest in photography was realised.
Have a great day,

dark and gloomy, but at the same time so beautiful and moody scene!
Irish coastline seems to be one of the most beautiful in the World.
And no matter how ridiculous it may sound,I´d say the cloudy weather was a real blessing here,as it helps you to create so unique mood of the scene.
Beautiful and very atmospheric composition!

Davvero bella immagine tipica dell'Irlanda, mi piace molto!
Ti auguro una bella domenica amica mia.

Very nice picture with sharpness and detail. It is well presented, well made and well documented. Congratulations! ... It's a great shot worthy of inclusion in a travel book.
Friendly and good Sunday.

A typical irish weather ! It could be Britton as well by the way
Excellent construction of the image, natural colors, mild light
bravo, have a nice evening, best regards

williewhistler (15571) 2014-03-02 2:42
this is such an expertly composed shot, taken from a well chosen view point everything is in just the right place in the frame with the lighthouse and the surrounding cottages positioned right on a third.
The long exposure has worked really well both on the sea and the sky, those brooding clouds adding enormously to the overall atmosphere of the lonely location.
Oh,I nearly forgot, that lonely little dandelion and spiky grasses adds a little bit extra for me.
Kindest regards Les.

accomplished use of the ND filter, you mastered the light superbly and it gives this wonderful view a soft magical feel all of its own. Amazing fg textures and DOF make the clarity and atmosphere of this place palpable. Beautiful and stylish imagery!
Enjoy your Sunday - B.

Hello dear Lisa, very good picture of this beautiful and interesting lighthouse surrounded by beautiful nature, very well captured in this beautiful image with good sharpness, light and color. Excellent and interesting job well done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good evening and happy start to the week.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.

I remember you commenting before about how you find the light so different in Ireland, and having bounced a little around the gallery today, and visited many countries, I can see exactly what you mean, it seems almost as if the sun is shining down, but through perhaps a thick crystal ashtray (That's a weird image I know) You did an amazing job in coping with that, as this is a very magical shot. A beautiful lighthouse, always a fantastic subject, but you go from the height of its tower, to the depths of the rocks below and the gloomy looking pool. I get the sensation you were REALLY close to the edge when you took that, so commendations for your bravery, especially in Irelands rather wet slippery grass!
The sky above is so dramatic and moody and looks really wonderful.
Strangely the one solitary yellow flower at the bottom of the scene makes a big impact on the otherwise darker colored scene. A beautiful shot, very Lord of the Rings-ish. I have to, really have to get my self to Donegal soon, perhaps this summer holiday!
Sergiom (67502) 2014-03-02 5:27
What a nice point of view on the light house.I hope your spot was not to slippery because you were very close to the edge. The sky is tipically Irish but beautiful.
Have a great whatever day you are in Australia.
ikeharel (62989) 2014-03-02 6:41
Grey clouds above, maybe "forced" a long 20 sec. exposure, Lisa, and that gave a special contrast between the "slikey" water texture and the outlines of the big rocks.
Of course the main subject is the light-towewr, yet I reckon a beautiful carved stair-way going down to the small fjord water's.
POV chosen superbly, cheers.
Have a nice new week,
ktanska (25903) 2014-03-02 8:30
I'm not a fan of cloudy landscapes, because I'm not a fan of cloudy weather. But on this shot it is essential part of that place. Sunshine would be exception, maybe even sugared reality.
Impressive place with all the rough rocks, lighthouse on the edge and narrow bay fitting perfectly on this framing.
(Yeasterday was the first even partially sunny weekend day since I returned from Australia.)
marabu61 (9503) 2014-03-02 8:52
What a great place, this is quite an impressive lighthouse. Superb view over the lighthouse and the sea indeed. The effect of the 20 sec. exposure on the water and the sky is gorgeous.
have a great sunday

Howdy Fanad O'Lisa,
Fine view of a classical lighthouse perched a top of rocky promontory. The stormy cloud layer aids in revealing the rocks' geology details. Your image places the lighthouse in its natural environment with a atmospheric reason for its existence.
holmertz (45281) 2014-03-02 10:09
This is a stunning scenery captured from a perfect POV. The natural beauty is strongly enhanced by the dark sky and the intense colours. I don't often watch any fantasy movies but this view makes me think of one. Maybe because to me the lighthouse seems to be built on the head of a giant monster, just about to wake up after staying asleep for a thousand years.
I am most impressed by the technical qualities as well.
siudzi (34141) 2014-03-02 10:10
Love this moody capture! The special light and quite dark tonality of the scene made it truly original and outstanding. Brilliant capture. Very well done as always.
macjake (61504) 2014-03-02 11:39
THIS is the type of scene i'd be 'hunting' for while driving around in our rented car while in Ireland or Scotland!
I can almost feel the wind in my face now lol
take a moment....ah yes... lol
but for this scene I think i'd need my umbrella!
you know what the best part of the scene is??? the lower 1/3. Look at those rocks, the black water, the brown and darker brown tones...beauty!
Oh this is a place I'd be sticking around for at blue hour and black hour for sure!!
love this one for many reasons.
keep them coming

Hello dear Lisa,
Impressive image of the white light house.Excellent image quality with good effects of the ND filters evident in the colors and sharpness. TFS.
tyro (22164) 2014-03-02 11:54
Ciao cara Lisa,
Whoa!! This picture is absolutely stunning! If this is the sort of result you can get by using a 10 stop ND filter, I'm going to rush out and buy one - though I'm sure that this picture's not just about a filter - I suspect I need to improve my photography too.
Perhaps the light was not in your favour but you have certainly managed it extremely well here to produce a perfectly composed and dramatic photograph with the most delicious light and an atmosphere so in keeping with Ireland. In fact, other than perhaps Scotland, I cannot think of anywhere else this picture could have been taken.
The light and dramatic contrasts are divine as also are the lovely rich colours. Exposure is bang-on and the details and sharpness are exquisite.
federico (3104) 2014-03-02 14:41
wonderfull view so well composed, the lighthouse is surely the focus in your picture and you managed really well the foreground also, the grass and the small bay definetely complete your well managed composition
SnapRJW (31627) 2014-03-03 2:49
I am really impressed with the detail and mood here Lisa. The overcast weather and your management combine to present the lighthouse and rocky promontory with a feeling of isolation and melancholy which I think works well with the location and subject. Tell me, do you have any colour cast issues with your 10-stop. I have yet to get a decent daytime shot with mine as the colour cast is really horrid and tricky to correct.
This is just so Irish I can imagine a plaintive voice singing a dirge. Here is an example (not Irish though) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_jKsQjuCfE
ChrisJ (104347) 2014-03-05 7:09
Sort of looks like Victorian weather. Good choice of a vertical frame with excellent sharpness considering the longer time exposure and silky motion blur of the water. The fg grass adds depth and the natural contours of the cliffs provide lead in lines and perspective. The lighthouse at right with stairs makes a good focal point. Tfs!

Ciao Lisa, gran bella vista col faro che si staglia nitido su un cielo minaccioso, ottima esposizione e bella profondità, bravissima, un abbraccio Silvio
emka (86535) 2014-03-05 13:40
Ciao Lisa, it is just as I imagine the landscape of Ireland on the north. Rather a gloomy day but the more wild landscape seems and impressive this lone lighthouse is. Wonderful rocks and overcast sky looks dramatic.

very challenging light here indeed but you achieved an interesting dark mood. I like it very much. I had the pleasure to visit this lighthouse also at pretty bad weather (click here to see it) so I helped myself with HDR. Now I don't like the effect which I created at that time.
You picked a great POV and the filter has smoothed both the sea and the clouds. Very interesting effect.
Didi (59078) 2014-03-08 9:08
May I turn on the lighthouse ? I can't resist to make a workshop with the special filter
Nice view with a dramatic sky and good balance of contrast
If you don't accept the WS plese tell me And I'll remove it
ManishaJain (292) 2014-03-08 10:42
Stunning shot with great pov. The shades of green with a grey background is making the scene so eye catchy
Bartleby (13552) 2014-03-13 13:12
A superb spot and superb shot Lisa! I like it a lot. Seems to be it's a bit on the dark side, don't you think? Bit of extra exposure maybe? Other than that, thumbs up!
brianmcc (6219) 2014-04-05 13:35
this is a classic view of this much photographed lighthouse. yet i've never been there. you got a typical grey day with heavy overcast skies. love the portrait framing to take in so much depth from the grass foreground to the headland beyond. you've captured the bleakness and remoteness superbly well.
fritzi007 (8697) 2014-04-09 11:41
nice color contrast, very good depth of field, very good comment, congratulations!
Warmest wishes too
fotka (3945) 2014-05-06 6:27
You chose perfect place for this shot. I like the rocky coastline of Ireland in the FG and the white lighthouse against the dark gray stormy sky in the BG. Great quality picture and thanks for sharing.
