Photographer’s Note

This is the explosion of the big bubble of the strokkur geyser in Iceland.

Just like this one

Strokkur (Icelandic for "churn") is a geyser in the geothermic region beside the Hvítá River in Iceland. Strokkur is only a few metres away from Geysir.

However, unlike the big Geysir which does not erupt anymore and may be dormant for years at a time, Strokkur erupts very reliably every 5-10 minutes, hurling boiling water to heights of up to 20 metres towards the sky. After a few seconds, the fountain subsides and the waters around it calms down. During these times, Strokkur appears as a sheet of clear water surrounded by steam.

On the picture is the big bubble at the start of the eruption. This is not something one can see without taking a picture at a fast speed.
