Photographer's Note

Hvalfjörður - Whale fjord, is the biggest fjord in southwest Iceland, named after the large number of whales which could be seen here.
During World War II, the fjord’s deep anchorages made it one of the most important bases in the North Atlantic, when British and American navies were stationed here, providing a port and safe haven for supply ships travelling between Europe and North America. One of the piers built by the US Navy was later used by the Hvalur whaling company, until commercial whaling was shut down in the 1980s.
