Photographer’s Note
Corrugated tin and concrete comprise the majority of homes built in Iceland, due to the durability and strength of the materials.
Sustained winds can exceed 100 kph (60 mph) with gusts to 120-130 during the gloomy late winter, so it's essential to design and construct homes to withstand near-hurricane force winds.
Cast concrete forms can be rented in a variety of sizes, which are then bolted together, and reinforced with steel bars before the concrete is added. There are an enormous number of shapes and designs to choose from, so the possibility to design your own custom home is only limited to your imagination.
The openings for windows and doors are pre-determined and are of standard sizes, so adding them later requires very little in the way of custom shaping. Once the exterior steel cladding is added, the house is wind-proof, very well insulated, and will last for 100s of years in the harsh conditions usually found here.
