Steinunn Thˇoraransdˇttir's evocative and disconcerting sculptures are scattered around the Iceland, lending an even moodier aura to an already surreal landscape.
Thˇoraransdˇttir's art represents both the Icelandic landscape and the Icelandic people. The faces of her characters are blank "but in the subtly differentiated postures of the bodies, anguish, supplication, yearning, resignation, aspiration and a host of other emotional states can be read. For an artist who grew up surrounded by volcanoes and glaciers, mountains and waterfalls, and an endless expanse of sky and sea, existential themes and the sublime drama of life are near-at-hand subjects and almost mandatory." (from the book "Steinunn Thˇoraransdˇttir")
This silent, emotive group greets you and bids you farewell at Keflavik airport ~ foreshadowing what to expect during your visit to Iceland, and then later, reminding you of what you are leaving behind....
