This is a photo I've been wanting to post for awhile because its the very first photo I ever took in Iceland!
As soon as we left the airport with our rental car we headed to the Reykjanes Peninsula, just south of Reykjavik and close by the airport.
It didn't take long to find ourselves right along the ocean with many subjects to photograph. The excitement was probably coming out of our pores :) We all have had that experience and feeling of finally reaching a destination we have been waiting such a long time for.
We came across this charming fishing boat sitting on the rocks near the ocean. Why its sitting here is totally beyond me, but I wasn't about to pass up the opportunity. The color markings on the boat reflect the Iceland National Flag.
Hope you like this HDR shot.
I'll add some WS photo's of slightly different views too.

Iceland is a wonderful nation, its thousand colours make it one of the most photogenic place in the world.A concept summarized in this picture.Black rocks, blue skies (often grey or worse, to tell the truth) and quiet spaces.Excellent composition.

Hi Craig - A lovely trio of images, the light is very attractive bouncing its warmth off the painted hull. I love the strong contrast between the boat and rocks, it draws attention to your subject which stands almost isolated against the softly textured sky. I can well imagine how excited you must have been living your dream and assailed by photo opportunities on all sides! Magical. warm regards rosemary

Hello Craig ,
Almost minimalistic , but very attractive composition . The contrasts and the lighting are just striking . The angle of view and the framing are perfect .

An interesting post taken based on the rules so the scene looks very classy and elegant. Like the bright tones of the boats which have been captured here and fantastic clear blue sky of the background. Well seen and done. TFS.

A well composed shot with the dry docked boat at left well positioned in the frame. Good sharpness and a superb warm vs cold colour contrast between the red stripes and the blue sky. Excellent shadow detail along the rocky shoreline. Tfs!

Excellent shot of the old fishing boat. Great use of light and POV. I love the way the light catches the side of the hull. Great composition.

Beautifully warm colours over this scene. Very good pictures of this boat. As you say, peculiar to find a boat on land, I assume there is no tidal water here to take it out to its right element, when time comes.

I could well imagine your joy when you took this first photo after your arrival to Iceland. The weather and lighting could not have been much better and you made excellent use of it. The photo is also very well-composed. And congratulations on your excellent HDR job. It is easy to do a bad HDR job while the opposite is more difficult. Here you have difficulties to see that it is a HDR. These HDRs are in my view the best ones. TFS and have a nice day !

Very profi-looking photo. You have an excellent light and composition here.
I am surprized to see that you used a tripod for a 1/500 sec! I don't look for a tripod as long as shutter speed is slower than 1 sec.s :))
Second thing is, i would bet that this is not an HDR photo. I am curious why you went for HDR, as i guess the original version wouldn't look much different than that.

Getting good light is wonderful to see.

magnificent first impression of Iceland and what you expect in the next days!Stunning view!I think HDR helped you in this case to emphasize this beautiful, warm light.I like also so strong contrast betwen the rocky ground and the blue sky.

Hi Craig, your work in HDR on this pic is very light, perfect to adjust lights, colors and details, and i know how you're a master to make HDR..ehehe...the pic is simple but really beautiful, the imposing perspective make the difference whit this magic and hard light on the boat.Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

A nice attractive way of starting the boat series. I like it a lot and I wait for the next ones!
Have a fine weekend.

it is strange when I am on a photographic mission it is usually the first few shots and perhaps the last few I take that seem to work the most. This is a wonderfully simple yet quite appealing shot, which you have captured and processed beautifully. Excellent as always.
Have a great weekend - Brian.

J'aime beaucoup l'emplacement du bateau dans l'image. J'aime comment tout le reste est dans l'ombre, comme pour lui laisser toute la place sous la lumière.

This is the kind of shot I would be pleased to have taken myself. Light, shade, shape and colour that when viewed from a distance has a 2D abstract aspect underlying it. I like how the boat seems slightly at odds with its surroundings as if it was placed there by a giant playing a joke!
Noel_Byrne (24852) 2013-05-03 9:30
I love this HDR, it certainly has a very 3D like pop to it, and this suits the subject so perfectly well. I genuinely feel i could reach in and touch that boat! Its colours are superb and very bold against the rocks and soft sky. Really nicely done!
abmdsudi (43718) 2013-05-03 9:40
Your composure is just right for this shot, right place right time.
What a great little boat, obviously true colourful beautifully bold indeed, the warm light catching on the side makes it so vivid.
A stunning shot, Well done

Jolie mise en image de ce bateau superbement éclairé. J'aime bien aussi la version du WS avec un peu de mer.

I love the way you use HDR, it makes a very natural picture ! A nice subject and a well balanced composition. The light makes the colours of the boat very nice. Very good sharpness too.
Have a nice day,

Interesting observation from Deniz which echoed my thoughts as I read your note! With such delicious light, I thought whether it was right when you mentioned HDR...but reading your thread I have no doubt on that! So did you use single shot HDR or the usual 3+ shots?
The details are beautiful with the light on the boat, though the rocks are a bit dark IMHO. Sky presents nice contrast with the bright cream colour of the boat!
Hansaphotos (6903) 2013-05-21 11:08
Kind of surreal scene here, with the boat placed on shore surrounded only by rocks. The fine light illuminates the boat and brings out very nice colours. The flag reflected in the bow is a nice bonus. Great work! TFS. Have a nice week.
annjackman (19937) 2013-05-30 10:51
This is a strong shot with the boat proudly sitting on the rocks. The sky has some lovely gentle tones in it and wispy clouds making a wonderful BG.
This is a place that I would love to visit.
Best wishes, Ann
