Highway one at the base of a scree slope of Krossanesfjall (mountain) between Höfn and Djupivogur in the Eastern Fjord region of Iceland.
"Scree is a collection of broken rock fragments at the base of crags, mountain cliffs, volcanoes or valley shoulders that has accumulated through periodic rockfall from adjacent cliff faces."
"Scree formation is commonly attributed to the formation of ice within mountain rock slopes. During the day, water can flow in joints and discontinuities in the rock wall. If the temperature drops sufficiently, for example with the onset of evening, this water may freeze. Since water expands by 9% when it freezes, it can generate large forces that either creates new cracks or wedges blocks into an unstable position."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scree

hi trevor. this is one of those hidden beauties: one should click on the image to gape with awe. without the car, this could be a regular volcanic slope from iceland, but this car makes a "wow" effect. very impressive photo.

Impressive slopes - very steep - the car in the photo gives us a sense of scale - I find this type of landscape really fascinating & rewarding to be able to see at first hand... it looks like there is still the likelihood of rocks falling... Congratulations on your interesting notes & thank you for sharing.

I think when I here the first time driving with my car I would are very afraid with the slope beside the way.
You took a very nice picture, certainly that we see the car on the road as horizontal point.
Technical a very well picture, with pleasant colours.
Very well done, TFS.

I just couldn't help myself to comment on this photo.
having been lucky enough to spend time in Iceland myself, i know how dramatic the landscape can be.
and you have done a masterful job here in relaying that to us through a photograph.
that tiny section of road on the bottom left is completely drawfed in size. the steep slope is incredible.
its all about creative composition in this one, well done!!
