When traveling to Iceland in the winter, its possible to see the Northern Lights.
And we were lucky to see them on one glorious night!
We had just gone to bed, and the owner/operator of the guesthouse we were staying at said she would wake everyone up if she saw the Northern Lights outside.
Well, luck would have it that only about 10 min after going to bed, the lady went running down the hallway shouting loudly, "the Northern Lights, the Northern Lights!"
All of us, about 10 in the house, got dressed quickly and warmly, and got our cameras out.
It was FREEZING cold, and our hands/fingers were totally numb, frost had covered my entire camera!!!
Pentax camera's are known for working in harsh conditions, they're built specifically for that, and I'm amazed it worked so well in those conditions.
We were all outside in the freezing cold for at least 30 minutes to 1 Hr. And even using long shutters speeds in the cold temps, the camera still kept working.
This is a 124 sec exposure. It's not even close to being perfect quality wise, but I'm happy considering the elements at the time.
The shot was taken just outside the guesthouse, in the backyard, and the bright light in the middle is the moon. The green lights were weaving and shifting like crazy, like a snake. One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in my life.
Hope you like it.

Well this is a topical subject for me as we have just booked to travel up the coast of Norway to the Arctic Circle and the Russian border (on the famous Hurtigruten). It will also be in March as was the time when you took this fabulous picture but I am told that there is no guarentee of seeing the Northern Lights. Your luck was in and you made very good use of the opportunity. I love the swirling green light and the pink tinges to the horizon. The exposure was perfect and there is even detail in the FG.
A picture that you must be very proud to have taken.
Best wishes, Ann

Hi Craig - This must be one of the most spectacular and enchanting shows on earth. The green lights look like dancing gossamer, ethereal and totally other-worldly. An amazing shot, I love the colours and the whole ambiance. I can only imagine how chuffed you must be to be able to post this. Warm regards Rosemary

Truly a beautiful natural phenomenon and in wonderful colours!
Excellent with the moon surrounded by the long green light beams.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao e buon fine settimana

It's such a magical sight. I like the soft blend of colors, and the moon looks more like a sun with this long exposure. I get excited when I see some pink color in the sky; it would be awesome to see moving streaks of green. :-)
bukitgolfb301 (32638) 2013-10-12 13:09

One of the miracles of nature Craig, something you have to capture and shear with others..
I was in Norway this summer and I was mazed by the extreme long daylight overthere..
Good night fron Holland.

Congratulations love the contrast of colours.
mrichat (1339) 2013-10-12 22:05
It has been possible to see this light only for this site and your post. The colors are really soft and eye-soothing. A very appreciable work done here.
Thank you very much for sharing.

Voir une aurore boréale restera un rêve que je n'aurai pas réussi à accomplir! Tu en as réussi une excellente photo arrivant même à exploiter de jolie façon la pleine lune habituellement gênante pour ce type d'image.
Royaldevon (21463) 2013-10-13 1:05
I'm really impressed with this, especially after reading Philip Pulman's 'Dark Materials'. What surprises me is why you haven't shared it sooner!
The sky is just amazing!
The sweeping curves of colour, like a veil over the stars is out of this world!!!
I can see that you might like the f/w white area as a lead but, I think, I would prefer it cloned out so that nothing distracts from the beauty of the sky.
Have a great Sunday,
Graal (92166) 2013-10-13 1:33
Fantastic sky here. Nice picture from Northen region. Good comment and photo work. Great journey you had.
Have a nice day.

One word : WHAOUHHHHHH
No need for technical analysis in this case, this is a pure emotion moment.
CLODO (26450) 2013-10-13 3:22
I am always amazed to see nothern (or southern) lights, a spectacular natural event. I like the vanishing white sky, meaning that we are at the beginning of the night, and of course the blurred moon. We can see that the stars have moved during your long exposure.
carlo62 (19421) 2013-10-13 3:33
la natura ci mostra spettacoli grandiosi e la tua bravura ce li fa ammirare.
Credo sia impossibile immaginare cosa si prova davanti ad un simile evento, ma la tua foto e l'immaginazione possono aiutare molto.
siudzi (27757) 2013-10-13 4:24
For sure it is one of your the best shots! Love the visual effect captured on the dark night sky with a superb technique and quality. Simply outstanding scene taken so perfectly. Bravo!
Have a lovely Sunday!
delpeoples (48634) 2013-10-13 4:45
Ahhh my dream photo. The Northern Lights are at the top of my Bucket List. And wow you were pushing the camera to the limits with the cold and the long exposure. Beautiful colours, and above all, very clever light management. Thanks for sharing, have a lovely day.
Noel_Byrne (13356) 2013-10-13 5:29
Its perfect to me, this is a spectacular scene of the wonder of our world, and its ghostly trails look really incredible. I particularly love the strong star in the centre of the shot, and the fade of light to dark that moves so effortlessly across the scene. Amazing colors, and it makes me wish I had actually gotten to see this when I visited Iceland, sadly a storm prevented it. Love this, really love this.
All the best
pyffepa (623) 2013-10-13 9:13
So if I believe you, you took your picture on earth?

jcpix (6544) 2013-10-13 17:04
What is there really to say about something like this other than "cooool!" :)
What a terrific shot, and and experience to have seen and captured this amazing wonder of nature must be something else...hard to even put into words I'm guessing.
So worth getting out of bed in the freezing cold, and I'm glad you were able to retain all of your extremities in the process! :) Again...some of the things we will go through for the love of photography is crazy....crazy good!
Love the starburst effect, and the foreground light on that small patch of landscape is terrific. Also, the horizon light fading into the darker blue with the contrasting green trails is....well, a thing of beauty! Great execution and result. Compliments all around! Take it easy.
shevchenko (18725) 2013-10-13 20:10
