Landmannalaugar is a region near the volcano Hekla in the south of Iceland.
The region lies in the Highlands and is said to be one of the most beautiful of Iceland because of its various volcanoes and the ensuing special colouring of the landscape. Grey and blue ashes as well as black lava is found at the volcano Blßhnj˙kur. Red, brown and yellow are seen for example at the sides of another volcano next to it, the Brennisteinsalda. An obsidian lava field reaches from the sulfur hot springs near this mountain down to the river and the hut of the Icelandic Hiking Club. There people are taking a bath in a naturally heated little river. Sometimes you have to watch out, not to touch the river bottom to much: It is like a bed of hot charcoals.
A very famous hiking trail, Laugavegur, leads from here to ˇrsm÷rk and over a mountain pass, down to Skˇgar.
Landmannalaugar is a highly interesting place in geological sence but also for its history and vegetation. Most important though is the beauty of the surrounding. Such a multiplicity of colours and shapes are not to be found in one other place in nature.
This pearl of the interior is situated in a valley between colourful mountains at the dark edge of the rhyolite lava field Laugahraun. Many hot and cold springs create a bathing warm brook, where people bathe. The mountains are split with gullies and gorges, one of which, the Jokulgil, is about 13 km long. It is possible to hike all the way to its end, when the river is not swollen, and there are several other hiking possibilities in the area. Landmannalaugar is also the starting point for those, who want to hike to the Thorsmork area in the south. It is easy to walk there in three days, but many prefer to spend more time enroute to be able to enjoy the trip to the utmost.

Majestuous and with such a great light. The yellowish mountains in front of this beautiful sky are superb. Great shot.

A pleasure to see that the colours haven't changed since 1978 :D
Your note is exquisite and proves once more your infinite knowledge about the island. If you ever plan to return, let me know so that I can hop along and take advantage of your wealth of knowledge concerning Iceland! :D
You have caught the weather shifts in Iceland quite sweetly in this shot. The dark greens have remained true to their colour thanks to the could leaving them in the shadow and the bright yellow earth has the chance to shine in the sunshine. The sky is surprisingly blue and I would wonder about it if I hadn't been there myself to catch a glimpse of those amazing skies first hand. The crop also works really well here as it leaves us contemplating this mountain/volcanic range rather than being lost between earth and sky.
On thing that I'll add to the whole is the lack of scale.
It is hard to grasp how huge this all is from this shot. But I know how delicate it is to get that into a picture in Iceland.
In any case, a wonderful shot, as always.
Thank You for sharing such a fresh view :D
All the best,

such a harsh looking place mellowed by this beautiful soft light .. is it Yeats that coined 'terrible beauty"? .. applies to so much of the places you share.

Nice work, the contrast of orange against blue is great, and the simplistic composition is nice, with just enough of the foreground to break up the geometry of the mountains and keep the shot anchored.

A majestic landscape in a beautiful light. Good colors and contrast. If I tell you once more that the quality of your scan is great, you'll... ok, ok, ok, I don't say it. On the other hand, I think that the black frame is too severe.
