The birth of the only free royal city of historical Vas county dates back to the third quarter of the 13th century. Its foundation is due to the Volfer branch of the Héder clan that settled in Hungary in 1157. Two members of the founding Kőszegi family, Henry II and his son Ivan, relocated the centre of the family from Németújvár to Kőszeg before 1274. Charles of Anjou ended the Kőszegi family’s rule in 1327. One year later, in 1328 he promoted Kőszeg to the rank of the royal town. During the time of the Anjou rulers, between 1347-1381, the boundaries of the town were also established. In 1392 the king’s town became a manorial town. It was redeemed by palatine Miklós Garai from the Ellerbach family of Monyorókerék, who had taken it as a pledge from Sigismund of Luxemburg 5 years earlier. The Garai-era came to an end in 1441.
Kőszeg became the main scene for the events of the 1532 campaign in the third wave of the 16th century’s Turkish menace. Between 5-30 August, 1532, the Commander-in-Chief Ibrahim led nineteen sharp attacks against Kőszeg, the defence of which was organised by Miklós Jurisich, the mutual captain of the town and the castle, which had been mortgaged to him in 1529. After the last abortive attack a revolt among the janissaries made the Turkish supreme command withdraw. The last contingent of the disengaging Turkish troops left the outskirts – as tradition has it – at 11 o’clock on 30th August, 1532. In memory of this event, the church bells have been tolled at 11 o’clock since 1777.
The free royal city had its longest peaceful period during the 18th century. The town – for the first time in its history – tried to compensate its losses by establishing a settlement of Schwabendorf (Kőszegfalva) in 1712.
Kőszeg lost its primary situation in Vas county in the first half of the 19th century. During the reform period only a few craftsmanship sections could survive the production crisis of guild industry. The establishment of share companies, society-establishments and the first banking institution in the county are all signs of early civil development in Kőszeg.
Kőszeg was granted the Hild-award in 1978 for preserving its architectural heritage. From 1990 the town has been operating in a local government and market setting and has been looking for ways of renewal by means of capital input again.

Good vertical shot showing cosy feeling on old town. Nice church tower and half cloudy sky. Fresh spring colours on the tree leaves. The cyclist is a good extra detail.
siolaw (38292) 2008-06-24 0:18
Axcellent framing of the scene, light and colors are perfect and details very sharp. Good POV from the corner minimizing any distortions.
Manuj (441) 2008-06-24 0:25
good off center composition
the man on cycle adds life to your shot.
robertosalguero (246) 2008-06-24 0:29
The sky is beautiful and create an interesting contrast. The 3d effect of the tree is excellent as it seem to stand out of the picture. Good details and bright colours. The image is well composed with the church on the right side. Nice image and beautiful place. Thanks.
InasiaJones (31562) 2008-06-24 0:37
These colours are so attractive, like a mix of pastel in front of a strong vivid blue sky. The cyclist might not be big, but he's so important in your composition to carry this pastoral atmosphere.
A very good quality image, with carefully chosen elements to put in the frame.
Personally, I would have corrected the perspective on both side, as it wasn't too dramatic and could have been easily straightened. It's a case by case decision, sometime it's better to leave it that way, to suggest that architecture is "enveloping" the scene, some other time, it simply look like every thing is falling. Maybe you had your own reason to leave it that way.

The man on the bike adds much more beauty to the whole peaceful scene.

Floydian (30970) 2008-06-24 1:54
What a crystal bright shot with extreme high detail and colours. That Pentax is not bad at all if i look at this. The cyclist passing by brings the picture alive and is adding great interest int he photo. But above all those fresh bright colours are the best part here...very good work.
anducina (8407) 2008-06-24 2:08
Superb vivid colors, light-shadows play and clarity. The blue sky with white clouds, the white, red and yellow houses and church, the old trees with their shadows on the wall and the lonely biker make a lovely and friendly scene.
ChrisJ (109414) 2008-06-24 2:28
Good graphism of the red turreted church steeple at right, & the yellow leaved tree at left. Superb colour & contrast. Tfs!

asajernigan (21427) 2008-06-24 5:03
Nice composition here using the tree to provide balance for the shot. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail. The man on the bicycle adds life to the shot as well as providing sense of scale.
The vertical format works well here allowing for a nice closeup shot of the tall scene.

Cadrage superbe avec cet arbre et ce bâtiment d'une exceptionnelle luminosité. Les couleurs sont magnifiques. je crois que, comme André, j'aurais tenté un redressement des perspectives.

Jó napot George,
an interesting place and old architecture of Koszeg. Excellent quality of photo. Good informations in note and well done picture. I like it.
atus (15856) 2008-06-25 0:35

Angshu (56748) 2008-07-02 21:52
Beautiful light for this beautiful picture. The colours are very attractive, sort of under a strong vivid blue sky. The cyclist is so important in your composition. Very well composed & executed shot.

Hey, George! This picture is perfect! The lights, the colours, the sharpen details! The composition is very nice with the trees and that nice church. Good to see the man biking as well! Excellent work!
jaywalker (16101) 2008-07-07 12:02
Hi George, A beautifully composed photo with sharp detail, the light is wonderfully balanced, the line of the three trees to the left & the church tower are all very well positioned in frame, the old man on his bike & the lamp in centre bottom finish the photo brilliantly, kind regards Wilson.
Jakab (3867) 2008-08-01 14:10
azizbilgili (2111) 2008-09-08 6:08
Nice perspective, wonderful architecture...
npecanhuk (73490) 2008-09-09 2:49
That's a spectacular photograph!
The low pov and specially the composition, putting together those beautiful buildings (the tower is gorgeous) and those trees is superb! The sky is also a highlight and small details, such as the lamplights and the man on the bike are all very suited to the image and creates a very pleasant atmosphere in the scene!
Excellent sharpness, management of light and wonderful colors!
TFS - Congratulations!

guardando il tema: "hoooooooooo", ho trovato questa tua foto di qualche anno fa.
Davvero molto bella.
Un ottimo taglio verticale dove la scena č ben inserita.
Luce e resa cromatica sono eccellenti.
Bella la vista dell'anziano signore in bicicletta, dando vita e movimento.
Well done and TFS!
