Chain Bridge (Lánchíd)

The Chain Bridge is Budapest's premier bridge both in terms of its age and its fame. It was only the second permanent bridge to be constructed over the entire length of the Danube. At the instigation of István Széchenyi, it was built by Adam Clark between 1839-1849, based on the plans of W. T. Clark. Its cast iron decorations and a structure that radiates calm dignity and harmony raise it to the ranks of the most beautiful examples of industrial heritage in Europe. The four lion statues at the two bridge-heads are the work of János Marschalkó; they date from 1852. The Chain Bridge was a world sensation in its day and had only one match in London. Not surprising given the design is also English. These facts all serve to make the Chain Bridge a national symbol: a symbol of progress, of national awakening, of connecting the East and the West. It is not only respected, but also well loved in Budapest. The birthday celebration, slowly becoming a tradition, is a manifestation of this love. The event was first held in 1999 on the 150th anniversary of the Bridge's inauguration.

The Buda Castle

The Buda Castle (Hungarian: Budai Vár) is the historical royal castle of the Hungarian kings in Budapest, Hungary.
The Castle of Buda was built on the southern tip of Castle Hill, next to the old Castle District (Hun: Várnegyed), which is famous about its medieval, Baroque and 19th century houses and public buildings. The first royal residence on the Castle Hill was built by King Béla IV of Hungary between 1247 and 1265.
"Europe has three jewelled cities: Venice on the waters, Florence on the plains, and Buda on the hill" - so claimed medieval travellers. Today, the view of both banks of the Danube and the Castle District of Buda form a World Heritage Site.
Several buildings in the Castle District are important in their own right, for example, Matthias Church; the office of the president of the republic in the Sándor Palace, in front of which there is a change of guards each midday to the accompaniment of music; and, of course, the Royal Palace, home to national collections and museums.
The Castle District's town houses with their courtyards, ground floor wings, gateways with sediles, and cellars with dried-up wells all conjure up the atmosphere of the wealthy Buda of the long-gone Middle Ages. It is well worth taking a peek into most of them. Running the length of the District's western side, Árpád Tóth Walk invites you to take a stroll with its quietness, its attractive landscaping, and its beautiful view over Buda. However, the scenery to the west cannot beat that of the eastern side, where the view over Pest and the Danube belonging to the World Heritage Site opens up from the Fishermen's Bastion and the Palace Square.

Hello George,
Good night time composition with fine balance between bridge and castle. I like the contrast of the different tones in the two halves of the image and the dividing point of the lion statue. Very good clarity.

Szia George,
the lights on the bridge are not easy to manage, well done. The lion is excellent presented and the castle in the background with all those light spots of the city is wonderful positioned. Too bad that the bridge is always busy with traffic.
