Photographer's Note

This large memorial is the focal point of the Heroes' Square (Hösök tere) in Budapest. The construction of the memorial started in 1896, on the 1000th anniversary of the of Magyar (Hungarian) conquest of the Carpathian basin of Europe. It took about 25 years to complete it with all the statues. The seven equestrian statues around centre island depict the leaders of the tribes that founded Hungary. The larger than life size statues in the colonnades are kings and other historical figures. Some of these were changed after the world war II, the Habsburg kings were removed and replaced with heroes who fought against the Habsburgs. There are allegorical sculptures on top of the the colonnades.
