Photographer’s Note

Esztergom is a small town (pop. 30,000) but it's Hungary's religious capital, since it is the seat of the country's Archbishop Primate. From the 10th to the 13th century the town was also the political capital, before the king moved to Buda (Budapest).

The basilica was built from 1822 to 1869, on the site of a medieval church that had been destroyed during the battles with the Turks.

In addition to its religious importance, the basilica has become the landmark of the town, due to its location on a cliff overlooking the Danube river.
