The first time I visited Budapest 14 years ago, the city was invaded by Serbs illegal immigrants fleeing the ethnic conflicts in Yugoslavia, the shelves of stores were empty and the few loaves of bread and croissants available in bakeries were stale.
Still, this city made a great impression on me and I was looking forward to see it again under different conditions.
When I was back this year, Budapest was a metamorphosed, magnificent world-class city, booming with tourists, luxury boutiques, fashionable restaurants and a very efficient public transport system.
Definitely one of my favorite cities in Europe.

Light from Buda to Pest, the other part darker, that's nice. Fantastic view, fantastic photo !

I am sure this must be a very beautiful city. I have never been there unfortunately but this is one of the places I would love to see soon.

Hello Andre - A city I have seen travel programs about several times and one I should like to visit one day. Your shot is beautifully managed; you found a super POV. Here we see the bridge linking old and new and the city officials were kind enough to light it up and then light up the impressive architecture behind it creating a pathway of gold across the frames diagonal. Wonderful! A fine blue hour shot full of detail. Warm regards rosemary

Superb panorama along the impressive bridge. I like the high quality image and the colors. Well taken.

I agree with you is a wonderful city, beautiful POV and beautiful blue hour, I really like the contrast between the artificial light yellow and blue tones, excellent depth, and the stars which form the lights, the diagonal bridge leads the eye to the fabulous cathedral, a picture very well composed...nice one...
frunchy (1517) 2012-08-03 1:23

A very interesting note and a fine picture by way of illustration.
Your composition here is excellent, the bridge and the red trails of vehicle lights leading us perfectly across the river to the city and the magnificent building (?cathedral) at far right. Lovely lighting, you having chosen the "blue hour" for this photograph, perfect exposure and stunning details and sharpness.

Bonjour Andre ,
Voilà une photo à l'heure bleue particumirèrement réussie . Le point de vue est évidemment superbe . J'aime beaucoup l'équilibre parfait entre les zones "froides" et "chaudes" . Le cadrage est millimétré .

Such a stunning blue-hour shot, Andre. The exaggerated s shape leading onto the bridge which is perfectly positioned across your frame. I particularly like the ivory-like glow of the floodlighting on the bridge as well as those beautiful star bursts of light in the foreground.
Thanks for sharing

Andre - you've posted one of my favorite locations from a fantastic angle one I posted a while back under completely different lighting circumstances and which has been posted a few other times as well. This is a beautiful blue hour shot with a great exposure and gorgeous light on the bridge itself; I love how Budapest illuminates itself at night. Great shot.

a stunning blue hour shot. Love the POV and the way you have executed this is exemplary. No loss of detail and gorgeous colours and star bursts. A real quality image and presentation. Well done!
Have a great weekend - regards Brian.

Superbe heure bleue de Budapest avec une remarquable composition en diagonale, une maitrise totale de l'exposition et une qualité d'image hors pair.

I really admire your skill in taking this. I rarely take blue hour shots because I almost never take a tripod. The view looking down has given a sweeping view across the bridge with the streaks of red car rear lights almost inviting me across. A really excellent composition and super sharpness.
Kind Regards, Ann

Fabulous shot at blue hour so well exposed and the obvious good framing, but also good depth, lead through and awesome warm colour so well set off to blue night sky. The warm glow fill light on the bridge helps to lift the image enormously which guides all the way with the vivid 'S' red glow further adds the little punch to the shot. I very much love to see the hint of motion and sheen on the water that works a treat, a fine effort of a beautiful scene to compliment the lighting. Well done

Une très belle réalisation avec un bon choix de pov, de moment de prise à l'heure bleue, une netteté excellente et encore ces lignes rouges avec ces courbes, bravo !

Salut cher André
Hehehe, great title, it'd wonderful to read how this amazing city has advanced in 14 years. This is a formidable Blue Hour with exquisite light management and composition. The eye is so naturally lead from the left foreground, around the curves of the road and across the bridge to the dome in the BG. The light is magical and those cobalt blue tones, wow, it doesn't get better than this. I see you chose f/16 here, and of course it's done its work so well. To answer your question as to why I chose f/11 on my lighthouse photo, I thought that this was the "sweetspot" on my lens, and was advised that going any smaller than f/14 would result in the sharpness "falling off". Having looked at your photos, and those of Jaap and Hercules, all using between f/14 and f/20 makes me think I've been incorrectly advised. Hmm, time to rethink.
Thanks for sharing this brilliant photo and also all the Exif data, which is always something to learn from.
Bonne amitiés et belle journée

love the title! I must say that this blue hour was perfectly captured at the right time. Love the contrasting/complementing colors in this scene. Well handled exposure and very well framed and composed. What could I say more? Great work!
all the best,

like the half lit half unlit pattern, with the important and grand structures being lit and therefore highlighted.the speeding boats and cars liven up the pic.for me what really adds on to the feel of the pic is the s curve at the bottom of the pic.and must add on, TECHNICALLY VERY SOUND.
mirosu (15066) 2012-08-06 0:44
A great use of light and colors. A well presented crop allows eyes to remain fixed on the bridge and the cathedral behind. This is a really beautiful interaction, and is a good example of combination nightscape photography. The street lights lends a lovely live to the scene. Well done.

I was in Budapest, 36 years ago! And the sight of the Chain Bridge and of Szent Istvan's Basilica is identical of which I can remember.
It is a good capture at the blue hour, in which the golden lighting of these two icons of the city enhances its beautiful architecture, while the Danube offers us its blue color, like that of the sky.
The vertical framing increases the depth of the image.
An excellent work.

Night Snapshot and with an excellent recovery.
High quality with the choice of aperture.
The title, the two cities and the only capitol city.
Thanks for sharing

You make me want to return here. I was here probaly about 8 or 9 years ago, I was using film camera still. It was already very much on the way to be a world class city. It was growing fast as we could see, the people are much happier, there was no sign of any problem of the pass. Pastry shop full of goodies, and luxury boutiques is fall of modern fashion and many little charming cafe and restaurants.
This is an excellent night shot that capture very well the romantic mood of the city. I have one or two of the night shot from here as well, but not as good in film and the air was not as clear as you got here. Really fantastic the streeks of traffic lights. The bridge is well exposed with wonderful details, even in this light. I can even see the expression of those lions face :) I had a nice little stroll across the bridge. Truly is a beautiful city. Also one of my favorites.

Budapest has been one of my favorites since I visited it some 25 years ago, in 1987 as a student, before the fall of the Wall.
Beautiful curve of the tail-lights, Parliament blue of the evening, and a wonderful angle.
