Hajdúdorog (click on the map) with less than 10,000 inhabitants is one of the 6 Hajdú-towns in Eastern Hungary. Their name indicates the fact that in 1605 the settlements abandonded due to the long lasting Hungarian - Austrian - Turkish fights in this part of the country were given the free soldiers (hajdú) who fighted under the command of the Transsylvanian Duke István Bocskay on the southern borders of Hungary.

The religion of the new inhabitants was Orthodox Christian (probably many of them were Serbs). In the progress of Recatholization they had to convert - but to save their rite they converted not to the Roman but the Greek Catholic Curch. This letter, according to the decision of the Synod in Florence 1438-45, is one of the 23 autonomous churches under the rule of the Pope, therefore must have been accepted by the strictly Catholic Habsburgs (from 1526 until 1918 also Hungarian royal dynasty).

The Hungarian Greek Catholic Church is now a Byzantine Rite sui juris particular Church of the Catholic Church that uses Hungarian in the liturgy. On 8th June 1912 Pope Pius X established the Eparchy of Hajdúdorog for the 162 Hungarian-speaking Greek Catholic parishes. The territory of the eparchy at first corresponded to that of the Latin Archdiocese of Eger (Eastern Hungary) and Budapest. But its jurisdiction was extended on 17 July 1980 to the whole of Hungary. The real centre of the eparchy with the real cathedral and bishop's palace is in the much bigger Nyíregyháza, the most precious temple is the Máriapócs pilgrim temple where Pope John Paul II celebrated a Byzantine rite mass in 1992. A curiousity of the Greek Catholics is that priests are allowed to be married. Pay attention to the double cross: Greek Catholics always use this version while the Latins use mostly the single cross.

This church, built in 1752-1772, has a nice architecture (another view in WS) but it is the iconostasion that is said to be its highest value.

Szia Laszlo,

bel lavoro
Giorgio

Ciao Laszlo,
Bel lavoro.
Ciao, a presto
Paolo.

Hallo Laszlo!
Frank

Szia Laci,
Attila

Szia Laci!
A fotóhoz kapcsolt jegyzet kielégítheti a TE felfedezők minden kíváncsiságát. Gratulálok, és szép estét kívánok!

Hallo Laszlo,
Achim

Hello Laszlo
How very elegant and pleasing this building is - with just the right amount of decoration and beautifully matched arched windows. Your shot has captured the colours and details beautifully, and from an excellent POV.
A very interesting historical note helps us enjoy it even more.
