Museum village

The construction of the museum village started in 1975 and it was opened in 1979. There were only 5 farmhouses then. Today there are as many as 80 buildings on an area of 75,000 square meters representing the traditional architecture of North-East Hungary. Most of the buildings are original. They were systematically dismantled, transported and rebuilt in the museum village. The reconstructed building is not only similar but identical with the original one. Only a few deteriorated elements had to be replaced. There are only a few houses that are not original, but even they were built according to the original plans and photos. The houses are furnished and equipped with authentic furniture, tools, textiles and artefacts collected in the village where the house once stood. Of course, the gardens are carefully looked after as well. The buildings of the museum include dwelling houses, farmhouses, barns, stables, a mill, a blacksmith’s workshop, a cemetery, a church, a firehouse, a grocery, a vicarage, and so on, thus giving the visitor a chance to walk around a miniaturized village from the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century. You can enter most of the houses, walk in the gardens or buy some refreshments in the chandler’s shop. You can even bring your own food and have a picnic!
The museum is located 4 km north of the city centre at Sóstó. It is open daily from April to October, closed on Mondays. Entrance fee: €2, a brief presentation (10 minutes) in Hungarian €3, in English or French: €4, live guide (90 minutes) in Hungarian: €10, English or French: €20.
