Photographer's Note

This picture was scanned from a diapositive (slide) picture I made during my trip to Hungary in 1970. Szeged is the fourth largest city of Hungary, a regional centre of the Southern part of the county. This picture shows one of its squares (Klauzál Tér) with people enjoying themselves in an outdoor coffee and a yellow streetcar passing by. The attractive office building behind them was the head office of Southern Hungarian electric utility company, with a five pointed red star, the hated communist symbol, is prominently displayed on its facade. Now the red star is no longer there, the building is the head office of the Hungarian branch of Electricity of France (EDF). When this picture was made Hungary was considered to be “the happiest barrack in the Soviet Bloc”.
