...the white princess of mykonos...
...the most photographed monument on the island...
"...It is an inspired architectural complex of five churches. Four of them are on the ground and one on the roof, elevated, that being Paraportiani itself. The ground floor of the complex consists of Ayios Efstathios, to the east, touching on two of the three churches built in a line: Ayioi Anargyroi, the oldest, in the middle, and Ayios Sozontas to the west. To the south the chapel of Ayia Anastasia touches on Ayioi Anargyroi.
The church of Paraportiani itself is built above Ayios Efstathios and is reached by an exterior stone staircase on the east side.
It is thus named because it is located near the small gate, the "side door" ("paraportiani") of the wall of the medieval castle of Mykonos.
It is conjectured that the complex was built gradually during the 16th and the 17th century, but most likely even earlier.
Its interior ornamentation is not of real importance but it is of major architectural importance.
The passage of time, and chance, have contributed to the formation of the external morphology, creating, through deterioration and damage, a unique aesthetic whole..."
...i am very much into that "holiday-in-greece" mood lately, and i keep going back to my greece shots archive quite often these days... here is one of the oldies from the summer of 2006...

I was expected a man walking in a subway or a room or something.
I'm surprised to see this photograph in your collection :)
Technically I like it, although I'd prefer the coloured version, as a lover of colour :)
The white church and the dark sky creates a lovely addition. (I suppose you have used a polarizer filter to make the sky so dark, or PS).
The POV is working fine too.
But the most remarkable thing in this one is the balanced exposure. The whites are captured perfectly, and so are the midtones. RAW enhancer?
Quite difficult scene I'd have a similar result after some work in RAW.
take care file
ribeiroantonio (22637) 2008-04-02 3:22
The photo and the conversion to B&W is very good as it is too the POV. Regarding the background on the left, it is quite out of architectural style and I would have cloned the antenna on the roof. Otherwise it must be a very nice place.

Good shot , and a well written note.
Beautifully composed with fine lights.
Sepia creates a different mood of expression here....
All the best, dear friend:)

a beautiful take of this architectural marvel. your desaturation seems to be bringing out the radiant character of the buildiing so well, that i even do not miss the traditional greek sky blue :)) composition, sharpness, POV, detail, light management: all excellent!
my compliments and TFS

A killer conversion here, Korkut, the slight sepia together with these whites... simple and impactful.

que preciosidad, aunque es muy triste...

I wonder how many people would have thought to do this in sepia! It's not the most obvious choice, but you are one of the innovators on TE. You know I have a preference for colour (too conventional by far) but I must admit this has a wonderful appeal, with the strong contrast. Good work
evanrizo (456) 2008-04-02 10:25
Hi Korkut, an other clever result with this chose to post it with this color tons.
The parts of the church they are stronger illuminated have a great contrast with the other part.
It works very atmospheric.
Have a nice evening.

Hugs & kisses

Chocolate time, Korkut!
Excellent color and great POV with amazing contrast and play with light and shadows. Your frame has really captured the architectural beauty of the small church

Light and your PP are great to enhance the building brightness.
Your framing is great, and this tinted BW creates great contrasts.
kpav (5031) 2008-04-04 3:13
Hello Korkut, excellent shot and very beautiful b&w. I like a lot the stong contrasts and the detailed shadows. Your note is very nice and informative too. Thanks for sharing.
MarcT (20964) 2008-04-04 4:07
Nice sepia treatment where everyone else would play on those famous blue-white colours which made the reputation of the place.

Geia sou bostani!
Back to Greece and your beloved Mykonos, huh? I think that you are in the mood of summer vacations! Well, you know how much I love this beautiful church, and I can assure you that your photo is outstanding! Congratulations!
delkoo (68) 2008-04-04 4:59
great black and white, your PP is very well done, the hues of white are successful.
gneufeld (15890) 2008-04-04 7:40
A very well balanced and striking composition. I think the contrasts are spot on and details perfect. Very well seen and TFS. Gerald
pboehringer (770) 2008-04-04 7:42
almost B&W but not completely. I love this inbetween two monochromatics. The composition is wonderful with the white building slightly off center. It contrasts so well against the rest of the image. Nice detail of VERY dark sky.
euryan (8438) 2008-04-04 10:10
The B&W looks great. The dark sky is great background for the white church. This reminds me very much of the old churches in New Mexico. The architecture is very similar, and your sepia tones remind me of Ansel Adams work.
jafadabret (56501) 2008-04-04 11:19
siolaw (38254) 2008-04-05 0:34
I like this dramatic feeling due to a fine B&W conversion with excellent contrast level, and nice sharp detail. Framing and POV are also fine
Tezic (17867) 2008-04-05 3:48
Ps. İş açısından oldukça yoğunum bu aralar... İlk İstanbul seferimde arayacağım seni.. selamlar...
vincz (19113) 2008-04-06 2:48
Very interesting black and white treatment resulting indeed in a "snow white" feeling, both in terns of colors and textures. Great work.
xavshot (69835) 2008-04-06 8:41
Bravo.
riclopes (35577) 2008-04-06 9:24
...and his ugly friend, right in front of her ;-) The beauty and the monster are chat companions since ever :) Marvellous monochromatic presentation, Korkut. Love the textures and the nostalgic mood.
Gerrit (46794) 2008-04-06 12:58
Beautiful place and composition. Excellent light ande tones.
stego (23962) 2008-04-06 19:12
How am feeling a lot like you, longing for Summer or just for holidays. This one gives me mixed feelings, because it is so wonderful, but at the same time it reminds me my plans of visiting Greece next Summer that I had to postpone again because of my wife's agenda.
It's a great compo, specially for its graphical arrangement and high contrast light. It reminds me much of the Tunisian island of Djerba although there they have mosques instead of churches.
ryno (6833) 2008-04-07 5:09
Hi Korkut, I love the play of light and shadow here - nothing like a whitewashed building and a stone wall to bring out the best of that. A very evocative photo and with summer coming, a reminder of the attraction of the Greek islands. Aferin!
brevbrev14 (140) 2008-04-08 7:52
Ahhhh Kiklades!!! i love these islands.....
very good image, as usual, i like your conversion tone...it is original for the Kiklades islands..always in colours
very good Korkut!
