Rhodes (Greek: Ρόδος Rhódhos; Italian Rodi; Ladino: Rodi or Rodes; Ottoman Turkish: ردوس Rodos) is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of both land area and population, situated in eastern Aegean Sea. This Greek island lies approximately 11 miles (18 km) to the west of the Turkish shores, situated between the Greek mainland and the island of Cyprus. As of 2001, it has a population of 117,007 of which 53,709 reside in the capital city of the island.

Hospital of Knights

Diagonally opposite the former church of the Order of St John in Rhodes town is the massive Hospital of the Knights (15th C.; restored), now occupied by the Archeological Museum. From the inner courtyard, a staircase leads up to the Infirmary on the upper floor (small chapel in a recess opposite the entrance; gravestones of knights). A passage on the right leads to the rooms displaying finds from Ialysos, Kameiros and other sites, including two Archaic kouroi (sixth century B.C.) and, in the same room, the funerary stele of Krito and Tamariste (end of fifth century B.C.). In other rooms are a life-size figure of Aphrodite, an expressive Hellenistic head of Helios, and a small crouching figure of Aphrodite known as the Venus of Rhodes (first century B.C.). Also of interest is the rich collection of vases opening off the gallery round the courtyard, which covers all periods from Mycenaean times onwards and includes some particularly fine examples of Rhodian ware.

Knights’ period

In 1309 the island was sold to the Order of the Knights Hospitaliers of Saint John of Jerusalem. The Order was established in the 12th century in Jerusalem for the purpose of nursing pilgrims and crusaders, but soon enough it was transformed into a combat unit and acquired vast tracts of land.

Having retreated from Jerusalem and then Cyprus, the Order established its Headquarters on Rhodes, taking a leading role in the Eastern Mediterranean at this time.

During the Knights’ era the fortifications were extended, modernized and continuously reinforced. Α hospital, a palace and several churches were among the many public buildings constructed at that time, offering interesting examples of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Ιn spite of the hostilities with the Ottoman Empire, sea trade was a source of wealth and the markets of the city were thriving. Under the Knights, the island had a period of prosperity and the relations between them and the local population was characterized by tolerance and often by close collaboration. Most of the streets of the Medieval Town coincided with those of the ancient city. The division of the town into two parts was retained. in Rhodes the Order kept a well-organized archive that included documents issued by its leadership, correspondence, notary acts, etc. The archive has survived and is found today in the National Library of Malta. It constitutes a valuable source of information for the period.

Hello George,
What a pleasant sight, this shot offers an interesting opposition of rather strict, classical geometrical lines and very casual attitude of the tourists. TFS

Bonjour George,
pas facile de bien capturer les lumières de ces intérieurs sombres éclairés par de petites fenêtres qui deviennent vite surexposées.
Un POV bien choisi et un cadrage qui nous fait profiter d'un maximum de choses.
Excellent week-end.
Daniel.

Hello George,
very interesting note and beautiful place. (You know also in my city there is one like this, but it's under restoration). The place looks quite a mix of those architectural styles you mentioned, but has lots of charm with its curving walls and tiled roof. The bright sunlight from the windows reveals the textures and details and allows to enjoy all the greatness of this place.
Kind Regards.
Stella
